Sinkhole opens up at National Corvette Museum, swallows cars
A massive sinkhole that opened up under a Kentucky museum Wednesday morning swallowed several vintage and rare Corvettes.

 The National Corvette Museum said the Bowling Green Fire Department estimates the sinkhole to be around 25-30 feet deep and 40 feet wide.

Maybe I'm reading too much into that picture, but those cars don't look real. It could quite possibly be that I don't want to believe it happened... Several classic 'Vettes are listed as in the sinkhole:
The museum said the cars are a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and 2009 ZR1 "Blue Devil" on loan from General Motors; a 1962 Black Corvette; 1984 PPG Pace Car; 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette; 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette; 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette and a 2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette.
The '62 and the '84 Pace Car are the most egregious, although the 1 millionth 'Vette hurts, too.  If there's any consolation, it's that there weren't any particularly rare Corvettes destroyed (like a '53 or a '63 split window) and that they managed to save the ultra-rare 1983 Corvette. The one good thing is that there were no injuries (other than those of us whose faces are permanently distorted from screaming).

Next time, suspend them from cables!

    At least it was only Chevies, and not something nice, like a Ford.

    Looks like the 62 and the Z06 are currently intact on the top of the pile. The others look to be buried in the debris with only their bumpers still showing.

    .... they should have gone with that more expensive Post tension slab the engineers recommended instead of the plain poured slab with the rebar.

    one of the projects I worked on at GM was in there too,a 89 with a 454 port fuel injection.When GM announced the zr1,we built the "zr2", to show them we could make it cheaper and as fast.Even made the cover of motor trend!

    I would have gone with a different quote from that series of movies, "I felt a great disturbance in the force. As if thousands of car enthusiast cried out in pain and then were suddenly silenced."

    In the movies it would be because of hatched dragons, Indian burial ground or giant worms.

    As I live in Bowling Green, I'm hoping its just giant worms.

    So that the cables can fail, and the cars fall to the ground?

    I'm thinking the best bet here is encasing them in Lucite.
