By now, I'm sure everyone has heard about the massacre at VA Tech. Let me start by saying that I hope the gunman is roasting in hell as I type this, and my heart goes out to the families of the young people senselessly cut down in their prime by some lunatic with a death wish.
Secondly, I fucking hate the fact that my first thought was how the gun-grabbers were going to have a fucking field day with this. HR1022, the new and improved Assault Weapons Ban, is sure to shoot to the top of the 110th Congress' docket (never mind that the mutant in question used a handgun).
How fucking wrong is that, though? Nearly two dozen college students senselessly murdered, and my first thoughts are of the Brady Bunch et al dipping their hands in the blood of the victims and using this horrific tragedy to further their agenda. I hate that I have to think that way; that circumstances and today's political atmosphere mean that, once again, the honest, G-d-fearing, law-abiding folks are going to have their Second Amendment rights ripped away from them because of the actions of one lone nutcase.
That's wrong.
What's also wrong, let me add, are the activists on the pro-2A side laying the blame for this shooting on the "gun-free zone" school campus. Allowing firearms on college campuses is not going to deter a suicidal/homicidal maniac. End of fucking story.
G-d damn this fucking mutant to hell. And bless the innocents taken so young. DAMMIT this sucks...

Sorry, got to disagree with you on this one buddy. Nearly sixty people killed or wounded is a massacre. If only one person had been legally carrying how many lives might have been saved ?
Criminals, sociopaths, psychotics, rabid dogs, etc don't care about posted signs or written laws. These places are simply "killing zones".
They can only be dealt with by force in kind, and God forbid you are on the short end of it.
mike
CCW may not have been a deterrent but if it was allowed, someone may have been able to put a stop to things sooner.
As it was, it was like shooting fish in a barrel.
Prevention of incidences like this through anything other than better family structures and getting to the root of these psychological problems. Damage control, however, is very easy. When a mutant opens up on a classroom, I want people in that classroom that can respond immediately to put down that threat. This is why I feel so disarmed as a college student. If that had happened on my campus, I would have had just as little a chance as the 20+ (possibly 30+) slain victims had.
Mike,
My point is simply that to focus on the "gun free zone" as the reason for the shooting is just as wrong as focusing on the gun.
Both take the blame away from where it squarely belongs, on the mutant who did the shooting.
Sure, it would have been a MUCH better outcome had there been a Dan McKown or Mark Wilson available on the VT campus, that goes without saying.
"What's also wrong, let me add, are the activists on the pro-2A side laying the blame for this shooting on the "gun-free zone" school campus."
The blame for SHOOTING is solely on the shoulders of the ex-dirtbag.
The blame for the existence of the Disarmed Victim Zone is solely on the shoulders of the liberal PC-driven fruitbats in the VA General Assembly, who refused to allow for lawful CCW on college campuses in the Commonwealth.
I haven't read a single account where the existence of the gun free zone was to blame for the asshole walking in there with a gun and picking people off.
That was all him.
The requirement that all persons on campus be defenseless? That's a whle different ball of crap.
I noticed that the Brady Bunch were exploiting it and asking for money by the middle of the day; I think they have a crew sitting around waiting for stuff like this to happen, just so they can use it.
