Sooooo, what do y'all recommend for stopping this sort of thing? This is the kind of thing that I said "I'll worry about that when I get big enough to attract spammers"...

Word verification. Pain in the ass, but no spammers.
I went through that for a spell with Haloscan, but they must have done something, because I can't remember the last comment spam I got.
Thanks guys.
I'm going to wait and see how much worse it gets. One spam comment per day I can deal with.
I'd prefer not to have to put up word verification or "approved" comments if I can get away with it.
Maybe when I've grown this little baby blog into a powerhouse like either of yours I'll have to take more aggressive measures, but for now I like the down-home approach.
'Cuz, y'know me, I'm all about the humble... ;)
I agree with AD. Just turn on Word Verification ... or, you could limit comments to people with Google accounts.
After I posted a couple of comments on the Herald Blog, some of the state hacks who disagreed with me started posting a bunch of crap like "Yo dude, you suck!!! LOL!!"
Limiting comments to those with accounts solved that right away.
Or don't allow anon commenters...or is that the same as makin' them get a Google account. I'm a cyberlexic so I don't know the diff.
Only thing I can suggest is getting your own domain and renting server space. Install WordPress and Akismet, and you've gotten rid of 99.9% of spam attempts. And you're not on blogger.com which, IMNSHO, is a big plus.
