Apparently I made an impression on someone, because I am now the Assistant Cubmaster for Pack 113. There is a deep disturbance in the force. Obviously there is something horribly wrong with the vetting process, as the idea of all those young minds turned over to me for
Heh. Heh. Heh. heheheheheheheheheheheheheheheh{slap}
Let's see... Cub Scouts... About a million years ago I was a Cub Scout, but a lot has changed since I wore the blue and gold. Bike helmets. No more Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, or Wile E. Coyote. Political correctness. Stifling PSH regarding firearms.
The Promise is still the same:
I promise to do my best
To do my duty to God and my country,
To help other people, and
To obey the Law of the Pack.
My stars. "Duty to G-d"? "and my country"? What kind of organization is this, anyways? Obviously some kind of dangerous subversives.
I'll fit right in...

I'd bet you will be fantastic!
Glad I don't have to worry about that; the day I become a role model is the day I start learning some new vices...
To obey the Law of the Pack.
That has an ominous sound to it.
Whittle a neckerchief holder that looks like a gun. I remember the wood-car "derbies"...
"The Cub Scout follows Akela (the leader). The Cub Scout helps the pack go. The pack helps the Cub Scout Grow. The Cub Scout gives good will (looks for opportunities to do more than expected/help others)"
Not a tremendously ominous law to be following.
I've got a 1st year Webelo, and a five-year-old who desperately wants to start Tiger Cubs.
Unfortunately, as I'm currently working out of state, I couldn't volunteer for a major leadership role. So, wife stepped up. She's Asst. Cubmaster (mistress?) as well.
My son was not the least bit interested in Scouts - he was never a "joiner" when it came to groups. I keep wondering how he ended up in the Army... *grin*
but, are you letting the days go by?
Is the water flowing under?
Same as it ever was.
Same as it... ever was.
BSA requirement for BB shooting at Cub Scout Day Camp is a fully trained Rangemaster - contact your local NRA for further information. They train all of ours.
They even let the grownups shoot if there's time. You betcha I had a good time at Cub Scout Day Camp!
This Tuesday, the 21st, I headed down to the Riverside Gun Club to shoot a couple rounds of skeet. Much to my surprise, there was a boy scout troop on the lower skeet field getting skeet lessons from the club! I did boy scouts for years but never did anything like that. They finished up while we were still shooting, and the kids came over to watch the upper field while we were going around. The kids were excited and I hope the parents encourage the hobby!

Depends on who Akela is ;-)
Never been much of a follower myself and damn sure ain't no leader.
Anytime anybody said to "lead, follow or get out of the way" I just tried to get out of the way.
I guess I could be called an observer.
Thanks everyone. I'm excited as all hell and just a little nervous at the level of adulthood I'm going to be held to... ;)
(I guess this means no showing the Cubs how to start a campfire using Coleman fuel. Darnit.)
buck,
Sure, it sounds ominous, but you have to remember that "the pack" refers to a group of 6 and 7 year olds. "The law of the pack" tends to boil down to "don't draw blood when punching" most of the time...
dirtcrashr,
Yes, the Pinewood Derby. That hallowed tradition of the boy with the machinist father always winning with a car capable of achieving Mach III on level ground... ;)
teresa,
That is pretty funny, considering that there's a heckuva lot more following in the Army than in Scouting...
judy,
I've actually thought about getting my NRA certification just for that.
Believe me, I am looking forward to the .22 shooting part.
[cut to: Rest of Scoutmasters, staring in open-jawed wonder.]
"Hey, I didn't know we were allowed to use belt feds!"
:)
adam,
Oh, believe me, that crossed my mind, too - what better place could I ask for to find future gunnies than at the Day Camp? Especially if my son enjoys shooting anywhere near as much as I do and can make "Expert"...
don't worry, it's ONLY one hour per week.
