Friday Gun Pr0n #35

Alternate Title: Das Cannon...

Here's a big'un: A Smith & Wesson model 629 .44 Magnum.

It's got a ported 6" barrel with a full lug. The extra weight helps tame the recoil of the .44 Magnum round, which had caused the Model 29 (the 629's predecessor) to be called the "most powerful handgun in the world" in the first Dirty Harry movie...

It's a damn shame that factory .44 Magnum loads are running upwards of $35/box of 50 rounds these days. This gun is such a sweet shooter, but the cost of ammo makes it prohibitively expensive for this non-reloader...

Jay's spot on . . . I've fired this beast but with all its mass, the .44mag is relatively tame. The recoil is stout to be sure, and the face-blast of overpressure is impressive. But given the choice of shooting a couple boxes of .44mag from the 629 or a couple boxes of .357 from The Snubbie From Hell(tm), I'll take the .44 any day of the week and twice on Sunday !!! And Jay, if you ever decided to take up handgun hunting, I have but one thing to say . . . Here piggie, piggie, piggie, piggie !!!!!

so when are you gonna make the jump and start rolling your own, Jay?

Seriously, what's preventing you from reloading? Time? Cash?

Sweet! Mine is blued, without the porting. I like it better than my ported gun which beats up my hand a lot worse.

Brad,

If I were going to take up handgun hunting, this gun is easily in the top five for consideration.

Weer'd,

When the attic is finished and I have my gun room. Which should coincide with the kids going off to college...

arthur,

Other than not having a place to set up a bench and having two small children underfoot, it's primarily me being a lazy asshole...

That and the picture of the KaBOOM'd Colt Anaconda...

CB,

That's interesting on the porting - I find that the porting on this gun significantly reduces the felt recoil. In fact, the last time I shot it I had to check the box of ammo to verify I'd brought .44 Magnum and not .44 Special...
