The Leader of the Band...

...has passed away.

Dan Fogelberg, RIP.

56 years old is WAY too young. Damn.

(And, in a vain attempt to prove that I'm not really a hardass, I just play one on the internet, admission time: "Same Old Lang Syne" makes me cry every time I hear it...)

Yet another fragment of my youth has passed away. "Same old lang syne" is one of my all-time favorite holiday classics. [sigh]

Wow. Just wow. That's a tribute and a half.

Mind if I put up a link?

(On a side note, we listened to a LOT of the same music growing up...) :)

"Heart Hotels" was one of my favorites.

"Run For the Roses" not far behind.

The guy was a wonderful writer and performer.

And 56 is awfully young.

Me too, as does "The Leader of The Band."

The passing of Dan Fogelberg is sad indeed. However, there's an important lesson to be learned.

News reports have stated that in 2004 he was diagnosed with LATE STAGE prostate cancer. We don't know the type of prostate disease or his medical and family history, but in most cases, WHEN CAUGHT EARLY, common kinds of prostate cancers have cure rates of 95% or better. My father is LIVING proof. If you have a family history, get checked. If you don't have a family history, get checked anyway. Do if for your kids. [/soapbox]

I'm not usually affected by the passing of a musician, but this saddens me. My mom used to listen to Dan Fogelberg all the time when I was a kid, everyone else in my family hated it, but it was by listening to one of his albums in the car that I learned to sing by matching the pitch of my voice to his. He had such a simple, melodic, peaceful voice.

He was a cool guy as well.

He used to make little "non-tour" stops in coffehouses & small venues in New England.
I saw him at the Folkway (now defunct folksy club)in Peterboro (NH) in the 70's.

AND, I second Brad's comment- git 'er done.

Let me openly state that I'm probably one of the few hetero dudes out there who REQUESTED two prostate checks before he turned 40, just to make sure.

Nothing quite as good as that cigarette after a prostate check.
