Here's the scene: it's about 15 minutes before we have to leave to drop my son off at the bus stop for his last day of school. Both kids are most of the way through their breakfast (mini-muffins and bananas; the first part will be apparent in a moment). I'm doing my customary coaching routine to get them finished in time ("Finish your milk! Ten minutes until we have to get going!" etc.).
I look at my darling daughter, the oh-so-recent birthday girl, and comment that she's only got one mini-muffin left. She picks it up, holds it at eye level, and comes out with:
"Mua-ha-HA! I already ate all of your friends! They were muffins like you! Mua-ha-HA!"
Five years old and already on her way to becoming the first female evil genius.
*sniff* They grow up so fast...
