The Answer Is... Biden?

SRSLY?

Joe "plagiarism" Biden? I thought they had re-animated Phil Hartman to play Obama's VP choice...

Bringing the awesome power of Delaware's whole 3 electoral votes to the table (and yes, I am well-aware that Dick Cheney came from WY, which also has 3 electoral votes. It's called irony, given the flack Bush took for picking Cheney).

Joe Biden. Very interesting choice. I would have put money on Obama picking a southerner like Jim Webb or Tim Kaine - more so Kaine, as he's got executive experience. I wouldn't have guessed Obama would have gone for another senator, and certainly not one from a small northeast state at that. I'm guessing that Obama's been paying attention to the criticism of his lack of foreign policy experience with this pick.

Or he could just be batshit insane. Who knows?

(Interesting side note: Joe Biden is exactly one day younger than my dad. Weird...)

Now we see who John McCain picks. My money's on someone stupid, like Mitt fucking Romney or Michael Bloomberg - IOW, someone to really piss off the GOP faithful. I'd love to see him grab Sarah Palin or Bobby Jindal, but I'm more likely to sprout wings and fly to the moon...

That is all.

I must say I'm shocked.

I'm considered the political junkie at my workplace & people often call me to get the skinny on certain races & recently I've told folks that in this anti-GOP ferver that the country is in - VERY much deserved, by the way - that a choice of Bayh, Kaine or someone like Ben Nelson would wrap things up for Obama. As recently as this week I told someone flat-out that Bayh on the ticket means no way McCain can win (of course, their reaction was "who?").

Joe Biden?

Goodness, if McCain picks Palin, he could not only win this thing, but win it easily.

Which, of course, means that Mitt "my stances on important issues suddenly changed the day I decided to run for president" Romney will be the choice.

Seriously, all partisanship aside, this is an unwrapped gift to the McCain camp & the entire Republican party. Horrible, awful, choice.

Suddenly, 41s choice of Dan Quayle seems somehow plausible, by comparison.

RW,

I'm not shocked. Biden is the "safe" choice. He's got the experience that Obama lacks; he's an old white dude from a different geographical area; he's about as exciting as dryer lint.

Biden is essentially Obama's Dick Cheney.

My guess is that the Obama camp is betting on McCain picking a GOP establishment wonk like Romney, where they can play the Hopenchange™ card with impunity (look! a black man running against two rich white dudes!).

And I'm betting they're right.

My guess for McCain is Romney. Second choice, and it would be a longshot, is Giuliani, but only because he's even more of a poke in the eye to the GOP faithful than ol' Mitt.

Palin, Jindal, or Leeza; the race is done. For McCain.

Romney, Giuliani, or {shudder} Bloomberg; say hello to Pres. Obama...

Actually, I can see the bumper stickers should Johnny Mac pick the gov from Alaska:

Yeah, baby!

I agree that Biden is a strange choice, but it reflects the O campaign's internal polling that indicates that O's resume is too thin. Hence a "gravitas" balance to the ticket. If O thought that this was in the bag, he would have chosen Tim Kaine.

I am still puzzled that Obama and Clinton couldn't patch it up, unless she slapped his hand because she is going for some shenanigans at the convention.

Also, Mitt isn't a bad choice for VP. Not as bad as Bloomie. I, too, would prefer Jindal or Palin, but they tend to accentuate McCain's age (is that obviated by the old crusty 35 year Senator as a VP?)

Mitt matches up well with Biden in a debate.

The good thing is that this pretty much means that Lieberman is OUT, as only a Hillary pick would have necessitated Joementum.

My safe pick is Mitt, with a dark horse "maverick" pick as Palin (Jindal is the next Republican president in '12 or '16 and he needs to stay where he is).

All the others: Pawlenty, etc are too fucking boring.

Go here to see Obama-rama next pick after Biden.

This is a HUGE mistake by Obama - it completely defuses Paris Hilton's "Whole the old white-haired dude" issue.

I think Biden is the obvious choice. His other good pick might have been Jim Webb, but Webb has stated pretty unequivocally that he's not interested.
Biden brings what Obama lacks:
1. Huge popularity among older voters
2. Foreign policy gravitas the likes of which McCain can only wish he had (Biden has 30 years on Foreign Relations committee vs. McCain's on Armed Services, and a very obviously sharper wit.)
3.Appeal to white, blue-collar voters in the rust belt

While Biden doesn't give electoral votes directly, neither would Kaine or Bayh. Neither is likely to bring their home state because people frequently vote split tickets for Governor/congress/president.

More to the point, neither one has Biden's gravitas or attack-dog style, something Obama desperately needs.

Aside from their lackluster nature and lack of testicular fortitude, what killed Kerry and Gore was the Rove slime-machine. It worked and worked well, and nailed the coffin on already weak candidates. Biden will chew those attack ads to bits, given the chance.

Bill, I gotta disagree with some of your points:
Biden brings what Obama lacks:
1. Huge popularity among older voters

Huh?
The guy has gotten a few more votes than ME in his many runs for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. Older Dems (AARP members) were getting on the bus & going to the polls, anyway. This, I don't agree with AT ALL.

2. Foreign policy gravitas the likes of which McCain can only wish he had (Biden has 30 years on Foreign Relations committee vs. McCain's on Armed Services

Come on. I don't even know if I'm going to vote for McCain, but his military experience & many travels abroad give him plenty of foreign policy cred. Sitting on a committee suddenly gives gravitas? REALLY? They all are on some committee, for crying out loud.

and a very obviously sharper wit.)

I agree, there. McCain has a good sense of humor, but Biden has a biting wit. Of course, he ruins it by never shutting up, but, hey, he's not a part of 'my' ticket.

3.Appeal to white, blue-collar voters in the rust belt

I do not agree at all. A staple of the northeastern Democratic machine somehow appeals to the rust belt? Uh-huh.
Maybe we can get him to comment on Jeremiah Wright, then.

While Biden doesn't give electoral votes directly, neither would Kaine or Bayh. Neither is likely to bring their home state because people frequently vote split tickets for Governor/congress/president.

Well, it's a bit different when the ticket includes someone FROM Virginia, instead of Virginians voting for Kaine & then Bush/Cheney versus voting for Kaine & then Kerry/Edwards. VA has been trending Dem for years, slowly but surely. They're about to pick up John Warner's seat, I'm willing to bet.

More to the point, neither one has Biden's gravitas or attack-dog style, something Obama desperately needs.

Tell me this isn't a part of the "the poor democrats are always playing nice while the mean old rightwing attack machine beats them into submission" argument. Please, tell me.

Biden going off with personal attacks, as he's prone to do in his committee hearings, turns off those indy voters that Obama is trying to appeal to.

Aside from their lackluster nature and lack of testicular fortitude, what killed Kerry and Gore was the Rove slime-machine.

Well, I guess you're not going to tell me. :)
Sorry that you're reduced to passing along talking points instead of discussing things. I suppose Dan Rather wasn't enough to get it across to you that Dems not only play just as dirty, but they're in cahoots with many within the 'news' media. Somehow, I doubt anything will.

Let me guess: Max Cleland was the victim of a campaign that compared him into Osama bin Laden?

Biden — the perfect foil for Palin!

RW: Appreciate the feedback, but I think we will have agree to disagree.
I'm going on poll numbers, not just personal opinion. Biden puts Florida into the possible Obama category for instance.
But I'll be blogging about this more later. Your points deserve a more detailed answer than I want to go into on Jay's blog. I Don't want to try a 1,500 word response with 20 links as a comment heh.

The media is now making the claim that Biden being from Delaware helps Obama with white, rural & southern voters.

HAHA. Biden is NOT a "blue-collar guy" who's in touch with rural folks. He's a snide, arrogant career Washington insider with a bad temper and a penchant for saying stupid & offensive crap.

Delaware is not a "southern state" by any means. Yes, southern DE has some southern elements to it, but those aren't Democratic voters anyway. The reason Delaware is a "blue state" is because of New Castle County, most notably the city of Wilmington, which is predominantly black and Democratic.

Michael Bloomberg? SRSLY, you must be kidding.

I'd guess Pawlenty, but that's what it is.

I like Bobby Jindal and I think he has a great future. The only problem right now is that he's a first term Governor and is not seasoned enough.

I think Romney would be a serious mistake, but he does have enormous fund raising and organizational skills. For some reason, that Mormon thing seems to scare some people off.

Then again, how many people vote for Vice President?

I tossed in Bloomberg because, short of Satan Herself, that's the choice that would piss me off the most...
