I've got somethin' to say
I killed your baby today and it
Doesn't matter much to me
As long as it's dead
Sweet lovely death
I'm waiting for your breath
Come sweet Death one Last Caress.
{insert furious head-banging here...}
That is all.
I've got somethin' to say
I killed your baby today and it
Doesn't matter much to me
As long as it's dead
Sweet lovely death
I'm waiting for your breath
Come sweet Death one Last Caress.

My soul is longing for, await my heir
Sent to avenge my mother, sweep myself
My face is long forgot, my face not my own
Sweet and timely whore, take me home
Am I evil? Yes, I am!
Am I evil? I am man!
While sharing the general disappointment with the new single, I feel a bit of sympathy for groups like Metallica. After they've been active for this long, they can either write in precisely the same style that won them their fans--which turns them into a sad parody of what they recorded early in their careers--or go in new directions--which alienates their longtime fans.
Both bands and listeners change over time. I can't return to who I was at the moment when the hair stood up on the back of my neck the first time I heard the heavy bridge after the second chorus in One die out only to lead into the machine-gun-sounding solo, or cranking my amp and desperately trying to keep my poor guitar-playing skills up with The Call of Ktulu, or making the walls shake to the bass in The God That Failed. I don't think it's fair to ask James Hetfield to return to belting out vocals, or the band to crunch out long phrases instead of picking riffs.
Instead, it leaves me sad. I have changed, Metallica has changed, and I think ne'er the twain shall meet.

"Blitzkrieg" has always been a favorite of mine. "the day is coming, Armageddon is near..."
I'll see your last caress and raise you a last kiss - by J. Frank Wilson.
Oh where oh where can my baby be
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven soI got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world
We were out on a date in my daddy's car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road straight up ahead
A car was stalled the engine was dead
I couldn't stop so I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screaming tires the busting glass
The painful scream that I heard last
[Chorus]
WHen I woke up the rain was pouring down
There were people standing all around
Somethign warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while
I held her close I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love that I knew i have missed
Well now she's gone even though I hold her tight
I lost my love my life that night
I'll show my age here. I can hear the Pearl Jam version of this in my head...
That one's sad, Ross, not fast & furious like "Last Caress".
Then again, if we're talking pain and loss, there's always Anthrax's NFB:
"We fell in love at first sight
I can't explain the feelings
When I first saw you
We were so so happy
A life of love sweet honey child
You'll always be mine
But then I played the fool
I never meant to hurt you
Or sleep with all your friends
We reconciled we found ourselves
Our love was meant to be
Oh baby can't you see
You left me standing in the mud
Crying to myself
A heart so full of pain
But we fell in love again
This time forever
True love prevails over all
She got hit by a truck"
Heh...
