Number 871...

I am now officially a member at the local gun club. Missed getting the same number as Remington's famous pump-action shotgun by one. If I'd gotten out of my seat a second faster...

I'm really excited about the new club. Sure, it's a small place, certainly not big enough to host a Bloggershoot or anything like that. And yeah, it's in an area that's gotten built up thick with yuppie condos, meaning that it's constantly defending itself and passing more prohibitions on the members (like no rapid fire; apparently that scares the white people, as Unc is wont to say).

But it's my club. It's four miles from my house. The yearly membership fee costs as much as four outings to the public range (the one that just closed down). Even at the anemic pace that I go to the range, that's going to save me money.

I am really looking forward to setting up shop on the rifle range with my Model 511 and sighting in the scope. Or busting some clays on a Sunday afternoon on the trap field. Maybe bring a couple .22 pistols to the indoor range for some serious target shooting. That's the best part - the indoor range is open 24/7/365. Neat little feature for a small club, that's for certain.

Now if only Mrs. G. trusted me enough to take my son with me...

That is all.

Nice! What's the max distance outside? Can you go plinking at 500 yards? :-)

Max range is 100 yards.

Which, given that I have trouble seeing the target at 50 yards, and don't have $700 - $1500 to spend on quality optics (nor a gun worth buying quality optics for, yet), suits me just fine...

Quality optics? Bad eyesight? Hardly barriers when attempting to blow up a milk jug at 200 yards! Just keep shooting 'til you hear it explode!

And, you know, hope you were aiming in the right direction.

Does this mean the photo-op has been closed? Given your report of how the lad has been mowing down dixie cups with his Red Rider, it sounds like he's certainly ready for some .22lr action -- under close supervision of course.

I never in a million years would imagine that I'd say this, but it looks like there is actually a significant advantage to living where you live compared to where I live.

This, of course, is limited STRICTLY to the part about the indoor range being open 24/7/365. I'd pay the membership fees for that alone!

Liberty,

Sadly, the club doesn't allow reactive targets... Although I think clays are okay.

brad,

The trip will happen; just... not as soon as I'd like.

tweaker,

They don't have indoor ranges in TX?

Wow...

Or is it the 24/7?

I know of at least one other range that's open 'round the clock, too...

ACK - I meant to answer your email... only it got lost in the shuffle. I'm STILL trying to troubleshoot problems with my father's illness from here and now I've got a cold to add to the fun. *sigh*

One day... one day I shall get my act together and go shooting. In the meantime, it's a good thing I'm about 1000 miles away from the people I'm having to deal with or I'd be smacking people upside the head.

Right now, if I could stop coughing long enough, it would be great to go shoot at a target. LOL.

Teresa,

Just say the word. I've got a shiny new club just minutes from the homestead, and I can take guests.

Life is good...

And as far as stress goes, well, that's what the Magnum calibers are best at. It's damn near impossible to be stressed when firing a .357 or .44 Magnum revolver...

Wow. The latest anything is open around here is 9pm. I'd kill to be able to shoot at insomnia-o-clock.
