30 Second Review of Sarah Palin's Speech

Initially, I wasn't all that impressed - I was really hoping to see Palin walk out on stage with the 2X4 in hand and start whomping away at Barry & Joe.

But I re-read the speech. Watched parts of it again. Listened to the reaction (my apolitical wife liked it a lot). And realized something: She did a great job.

Sarah Palin had three things to do with her speech:
  1. She needed to introduce herself to the American people. As a relatively unknown quantity, she needed to present her qualifications (a.k.a. wonk out) as well as her humanity (hockey mom/pit bull? Gold, baby). Check.
  2. She needed to praise John McCain - present a united ticket. Yeah, I think we can call this an unquestionable hit. She hit all the right points about McCain, with proper buzzwords and soundbites. Check +.
  3. She had to whack at the Barry & Joe piñata. This was the one area where I would have liked to have seen more of that hockey mom pit bull - while she took some definitive jabs at Obama, the words "unapologetic socialist", "gun-grabbing elitist", "thin-resume pretty-boy", or "kid-glove rock star" were never mentioned. Check, but with reservations.

I'd call this a high B+, low A- for a speech; or, delving into baseball analogies, a triple driving in a couple of runs. Good solid effort, she didn't mispronounce "nuc-u-lar" or name the head of Russia as "Don Corleone" or commit any other faux pas that would cause the MSM to pounce on her like a hungry lion on raw meat.

Good job, Governor Palin. Here's hoping we can call you Vice President Palin in two months...

That is all.

I must say that Palin's speech made me gag! I will throw in Giuliani, Romney, and Huckabee's too! They did nothing but display the same old nausiating, stale republican tactics and that is "trash the opponent" I was looking forward to a speech from Palin that provided us with a "breath of fresh air" and instead I ran for the pepto bismol because I got heartburn, indigestion, and diarrea. Little to no mention on the top issues like the economy and environment! All regarding war and being a hockey mom from a small town! So sad, but above all very unprofessional!!!Abismal to say the least! Palin made little effort to describe who she is and what she will do to better the economy crisis in conjunction with John McCain. She talked about drilling. Ok, but that has very limited resources. What after? She talked a little about biographical stuff, but just not enough...I still do not know who she is, other than she is a small town hockey mom with a short political career with some commendable accomplishments(firing a chef and selling a jet on ebay) but that is already under investigation. Also the fact that on Aug 17th she was part of a sermon in her church were it was said that "sermon described terrorist attacks on Israelis as part of "an ongoing reflection of the fact that there is judgment" by God of those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior."What? No way!!! That is a disgrace!!
As a woman and avid Hillary supporter I feel she made no appeal to the middle class working woman at all! Being a Hillary supporter I too questioned Barrack, but for her to sit there act smug, arrogant, and sheerly sarcastic and literally slander him and say that she had actual responsabilities and he did not was way too presumptuous of her and she is in no place to question his career and his integrity! Especially after he was one of the first to congratulate her as the VP pick and to be one of the first to defend her from the media when it came to attacks regarding her family. Oh and the little comment regarding the greek the greek colum, too funny. Dumb!I am a working class mother myself and I still can not relate to her. I stongly beleive that it is terrible that certain members of the media are bashing on her family and personal life, but I think it is even more sad to use your little 5 month old down syndrome baby as part of her political campaign to try and gain support of American parents in the same condition or to try to use her 5 children for that matter. I sure hope that I am wrong, but that is the perception I am getting. It is a sin and it is shameful! She should be a little more conscious and refrain from displaying them they way she does. If she and her party are so upset about the media bashing them(which the media should not be doing) then keep them out of the spotlight!!! She should have known once she was offered the VP spot that this was going to follow. Its typical regardless of your race, gender, political party or anything. I am sure that it would have been the same if it was Hillary, Obama, or Biden. The truth of the matter is they are trying to gain sympathy from the public by way of the media. Also, I want to know why a baby that young is up so late and in a loud atmosphere? Clearly it was part of her campaigning tactics and I think it is disgusting!!! He should have been at home sleeping like every other baby not up at all hours of the night. She and the rest of the actors last night conveyed the message that because McCain served in the military and was a POW that makes him American!! Although his military career and accomplishments are commendable and well respected even by the democratic party, I am insulted by the insinuation that those who have not and are not are less American. I was really leaning for McCain once Hillary lost, but Palin and the actors who spoke before her clearly convinced me to do the opposite! I failed to see the so called "reform" they spoke about. What a disgrace to America!!! Also, I think that Reagan was the exception to the typical Repblican image so I think that to bring his name up and or compare him to any Republican nominee, candidate, or President since his administration is a sin and absurd! He always tried to handle things in a civilized fashion before resorting to unecessary war! Also, I want to know why I saw little minorities (blacks and hispanics)at the RNC last night....hhhmmmmmm!! I am a white American, but I think that speaks for itself!!! I must say that I must admire her social views ie: abortion etc, but those are not the major issues in question right now, it is only a question for the evangelicals! The issue is economy, healthcare, education, gas, jobs, equal pay, it goes on and on! I sure hope that McCain cleans up her mess tonight or they are gonna go from bad to worse! Sorry if you McCain/Palin fans do not like the truth, well its reality, just merely going along with the message the McCain campaign is conveying!I calls them as I sees them...sorry.

If you expect me to go through and rebut each and every tired clichéd Dem talking point, you'll be sadly disappointed...

Uh, and the republicans have not had their own cliches? Oh wait. Republicans are untouchable. They are perfect. I forget that sometimes. They are "true" Americans, the Democrats are not. So wait, they are allowed to cliche left and right and obnoxiously trash democrats and the media, but it does not go the other way. Oh I see, its a one way street. Just like it has been during both Bush administrations! Don't say this has nothing to do with Bush because I will laugh so hard. Oh here goes another cliche McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time. Oops sorry I threw another cliche.

You haven't been paying much attention here @ MArooned, have you?

I hate the Republicans, too. I just hate the Democrats a little more...

I just want all of them to leave me the fuck alone.

Whichever political party comes closest to that gets my vote.

And these days, the Democrats ain't it.

Getting back to the subject of your post, my wife, who is apolitical for the most part summed it up for me this morning.

"She hit a home run".

That is more than she had to do, but obviously not less than she wanted to do.

I'll probably comment on my blog after I've had time to listen to the speech again.

jusalinger,
Your keen intellect handcuffed us with "instead I ran for the pepto bismol because I got heartburn, indigestion, and diarrea".

I mean........wow. Is "I know you are but what am I" coming down the pike very soon? Feh, I'm betting that you're less than 22 years old.

If you expect me to go through and rebut each and every tired clichéd Dem talking point, you'll be sadly disappointed..

Yep, they're making the rounds. The speech was written, it was shrill, she's a bad mom for bringing her baby.....it's truly amazing at how many people are so untalented on a personal level that they're content with being virtual worker bees for political partisans.

Wow, someone bought crankypants a couple sizes too small.

justacutnpaster,

If you thought that was an example of trashing one's opponent, you do not get out much.

The GOP hasn't even scratched the surface of all of Barack's trashable qualities.
