Yule Music...

We're having our first "snowfall" today (there's maybe a half a dusting out there). It's really starting to look like winter out there, and Christmas in particular. Last night we went to our first Christmas party, and as the Christmas classics played over the sound system, it got me to thinking about my favorite Christmas tunes...

I worked in a supermarket through high school and college, so "traditional" Christmas music to me is like garlic to a vampire. I prefer the more, uh, unconventional Christmas songs. Heh. So here's the MArooned Christmas playlist:

1. "12 Days of Christmas" as performed by The MacKenzie Brothers.

2. "Father Christmas" by The Kinks.

3. "Rock 'n' Roll Christmas" by George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers.

4. "Christmas Eve in Sarajevo" by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (The Boy's favorite).

5. "Dominic the Donkey" by Lou Monte (this is BabyGirl G.'s favorite).

6. "Run, Run Rudolph" by Chuck Berry.

7. "Christmas at Ground Zero" by Weird Al Yankovic

8. "Christmas Is the Time to Say "I Love You"' by Billy Squire

9. "Christmas in Hollis" by Run DMC

10. "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney.

So what are your favorite Christmas songs? Traditional, non-traditional, serious, not-so-serious, punk, metal, rap, what-have-you?

Let's hear 'em, folks!

That is all.

Oh, Jay. You should be truly sorry that you put up this post. A few years ago, I came across the following "gem" from the British National Health Service. So . . . without further delay -- and don't say I didn't warn you & all the good MArooned readers -- I give you The 12 STIs of Christmas.

RunDMC and the Kinks are on the top of my Christmas list.

I highly suggest the following entries for your consideration:

"Monster's Holiday" by Boris Pickett. The sequel to 'Monster Mash'.

"Red Barron Christmas" by the Royal Guardsmen. It's a Christmas song with machine guns *and* Snoopy. What else could you need ?

"Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses. Great for that last moment run to the mall, when everything is just so freakin' painful.

"The Junky's Christmas (aka the immaculate injection)" by William S Boroughs. Really not PC, definitely not mainstream.

What, no shout out to The Boss and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town?"

Have to say that while I'm not a huge fan, Madonna's "Santa Baby" is pretty fun.

And just about anything off the Nat King Cole Christmas album ...

"I Won't Be Home For Christmas" - Blink-182

hilarious and definately worth a listen.

AND, after discussion w/the Mrs., I would be remiss in not noting the album "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics".

We play it every year as we put up the tree.

"O Holy Night" by one Mr. Eric Cartman is a true reminder of the meaning of the holiday.

"Merry F**king Christmas" is moving as well...

In no particular order:

"Wreck The Malls" by The Bob Rivers Comedy Corp.
Goofy; with about 3 actual sentences for lyrics.

"12 Pains Of Christmas Lyrics" by The Bob Rivers Comedy Corp.
Another classic, I've probably heard it about 10,000 times since I was a kid, and every time I hear it since becoming a dad, I find something new and true to commiserate about.

"Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses.
The Waitresses were actually a "two-hit" wonder; who knew?

"Christmas in Sarajevo" by TSO.
Sounds like Vikings raiding your house during Christmas dinner. Katie Bar the Door before they come back for the turkey!

"Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by Andy Williams.
Yes, Andy Williams. Schmaltzy, over-produced, ripped off, copied to death and plugged into every single Christmas presentation since 1963. And it's *awesome.*

"Heat Miser/Snow Miser themes" from "Year Without a Santa Claus"
Not specifically a pair of Christmas songs, but the most bombastic tunes from the childhood Rankin/Bass specials *ever*.

What, nothing from "The Jethro Tull Christmas Album". Whassamatter, you?

From "Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow":

"Through long December nights we talk in words of rain or snow.

While you, through chattering teeth, reply, and curse us as you go..."

I like a mix of traditional (What Child is this?, We three Kings, more of the minor key traditionals.)

I also love the gag songs, Bob Rivers "Foriegners", "I AM SANTA CLAUS", etc.

My favorite version of any hymn is John Berry's version of O Holy Night. The man has a truly operatic range. The first time I heard it was actually when I saw the video on CMT; my then-husband and I stopped what we were doing and sat and stared at the TV until the song was over.

As this is Advent, it's also the proper time to trot out O Come Emmanuel, and I do love to sing it.

I also like Mary Did You Know? and Silent Night in the original German.

Another favorite is Joy to the World; though I don't admit it often that hymn is a fairly big chunk of the reason my youngest daughter's middle name is Joy (she was born the day before Halloween).

I'm mostly into hymns, but being that the ECUSA recognizes the Church calendar, we don't sing Christmas songs ahead of time.

Mine is "santa, I want a goat for Christmas" by some brothers in the 1950s. Will have to dig it up, but it's good stuff!
