Time for the first Friday Gun Pic of 2009!
For the first picture taken with the new camera (Panasonic DMC-TZ3, for those who might be interested), I wanted to showcase one of the more aesthetically pleasing handguns in the G. armory:
It's also one of the more rare pieces - a Colt Detective Special with a 3" barrel. The (far) more common 2" barrel variant was a Hollywood staple for G-man, private dicks, and gangsters for literally decades. This model in particular barely has a turn ring on the cylinder, and I even have the factory box tucked somewhere in the attic.
The only problem with it is that I'm hesitant to shoot it much because it's just that nice...
That is all.

Is gun. Shoot.
Nice heater, that one. I do have a weak spot for 3" barrels on wheelguns. They just balance so well.
Nice, nice very nice! I have yet to shoot a colt, let alone own one. I'm gonna have to make a new year's resolution to do something about that.
Excellent picture too, have you had a chance to play with the macro settings yet?
As Marko says, shoot the sucker. The people at Colt who designed and built that beauty didn't intend for it to sit in a safe somewhere to be taken out once in a while and admired.
They intended it to be shot, to be carried, to be used to defend the owner and maybe bring bad guys to justice.
It's a beauty and I'm starting to develop what is going to be a very expensive appreciation for 3" barreled revolvers.
Marko,
Oh, it's been shot don't get me wrong. I'm not a big fan of the awkward Colt grip (they apparently designed their guns to be gripped by Andre the Giant), and finding aftermarket grips for it has been a challenge (seems to be a common issue with Colt wheelguns, at least for me...)
As for the 3" barrel, that's what drew me to this gun. It's just such an oddity that, naturally, I had to have it...
angus,
I'm a big fan of Colt wheelguns - I own a half-dozen myself - and every single one has an action that is simply divine. Now, some of them are smooth because they've had literally decades of shootin' put through them to smooth out the rough edges, but others - like this gun - have barely been shot at all, yet are equally smooth.
Thanks on the pic! I haven't even scratched the surface of what this camera can do, but it sure looks like it takes better shots than the old Canon...
TOTWTYTR,
With the advent of the cold weather, I'll most likely be shooting this more often (indoor range is limited to lead bullets only). Although the Official Police hasn't been out in a while. And the S&W model 38 needs a turn, too.
Hmmm... ;)
Nice!
I've been looking aquiring another wheelgun lately, and I'm having all kinds of trouble finding a 3-inch barrel. I hope your gun gets some use, even if it's less often than the other guns.
Try to track down a Tyler T-grip adapter for that Dick Special. The one I owned had one installed, and it improved the handling 1000%.
The Tyler size you need for an old Dick Special is #7. (Many eBay sellers have no clue about what size their old Tylers are, but the size number is stamped on the inside, so you can ask them to check/verify.)
Jay, if you don't shoot it, you'll make Baby Vulcan cry. And that would be a shame.
Nice speed loaders.
Beautiful!
While 3" Colt's are frighteningly scarce, the same can't be said for 3" S&W M-36 Chief's Specials.
I find the round butt to be the most desirable, but it's more likely that you'd find a square butt 3" Chief's on the market.
Incidentally, Taurus catalogs their M-85 Chief's semi-clone in the 3" Heavy Barrel. It's nice!
