WantWantWant...

Okay. I mentioned the new short-barreled Smith & Wesson 1911 in my bleg last week. This afternoon, the USPS dropped off the latest issue of Guns & Ammo, with the SW1911 Sub Compact proudly festooning the cover.

It's official. I'm hooked.

Smith & Wesson SW1911 Subcompact .45 ACP

7+1 capacity.
24 ounces.
Scandium frame.
1911 carry gun goodness...

I've wanted to get a Smith & Wesson 1911 for a while now, and had been eyeing the Commander length variant, the lightweight scandium model, as a potential CCW piece. I'm a big fan of the 1911 platform, and would like to add a 1911 to the carry gun rotation for ease of carry (thin profile) and familiarity with operation.

Besides, there's always room in the armory for another 1911. Or three...

That is all.

Looks good - and made in Massachusetts, ironically.

3" barrel? Best make sure that you're a recoil whore like EddieCoyle on NES, Jay. I had a Para P10 with that short a barrel and discovered that the rather fierce muzzle blast was giving me a really nasty flinch. Traded it in on a P12 (3.5" bbl) and it made all the difference in the world.

Hopefully it'll be MA compliant so you can get your toy!

Uh, Ross?

Out of the three guns I carry on a regular basis, one is a S&W 360PD and another is a G30...

No issues with recoil here, boss... :)

I would be SHOCKED if it wasn't MA compliant - all the other S&W models are.

I'm going to shoot for picking one up in January of 2011 - that will be the 10th anniversary of quitting smoking. For my 5th anniversary I bought an AutoOrdnance AO1911, so this would continue the trend of getting a .45 for keeping my lungs clear... :)

Personally, I'm drooling over the Compact ES CCO pattern model. 4.25" barrel on the same frame as the subcompact. I find that barrel length doesn't really affect concealment at all if you use an IWB holster. The most important factors are thickness and grip length. 1911's are already nice and thin, and I think the little chop to the grip will make all the difference. I have a scandium commander and the grip tends to print just a bit too much.

I don't see where it would excel where my scandium commander can't....still I kinda want one too.

Libertyman,

Smith & Wesson has been excellent about making sure their guns meet MA requirements. To the best of my knowledge, all of their firearms have a MA-compliant version available (although some of the pistols are still in legal limbo).

Which is why I'm excited about this model.

zeeke42,

See, if I already had a Commander-sized model I wouldn't be as excited. I've been thinking about another 1911, specifically one for CCW. Of the three I have, only one is a possible CCW piece (the 1991A1), and that's a Gov't model.

The 3" barrel, *especially* from S&W, won't suffer significant accuracy loss (certainly not in my hands) over the 4¼" model, and it will assist in ease-of-carry IMHO.

I agree that a shorter grip would be nice as well, but that's not as big of an issue as 2" off the barrel...

Weer'd,

Like I said to zeeke42, if I already had a Commander-sized 1911 I'd be less enthusiastic about this one.

I really do enjoy shooting the 1911, and it naturally follows that a gun I enjoy shooting is a good choice for CCW. A lot will depend on what the "out-the-door" price is - $1200 is FAR too steep for me, but if it's more like $850 or so, well...

We'll see.

Like I said, I'm going to budget this one for 2011 as my reward for 10 years off the nicotine...

I've kinda got a plan in the back of my mind to build myself a 1911 commander sized sometime soonish. Thinking to do it with Caspian parts. But the difference in size between government and commander size means the difference for me between I can't quite get a hold of this thing, and JOY to shoot.

At least I'm not lacking for .45acp goodness, since I just got a Sig P220. <3
