It Cometh...

Buy A Gun Day, that is.

Yes, that magical day is almost upon us, the day we cut our checks to the government and then head immediately to the gun store to salve our wounded consciences... It's time to do our part to stimulate the economy and buy something in the boomstick family...

Tax Day = Buy A Gun Day...

I'm still having a devil of a time deciding what to get. On the one hand, after shooting TOTWTYTR's Smith & Wesson model 34, I'm REALLY keen on getting a .22LR snubbie for practice on the cheap. I'd also like to get a .22LR conversion kit for my Gold Cup and/or my P226, for more practice on the cheap (if there's anything the Bloggershoot taught me, it's that I need to practice a LOT more so that next time I can hit something besides the ground...) ;)

OTOH, I could really use a Ruger Mark II or III, maybe one of the Hunter models with the bull barrel. It'd be nice to have a reliable .22 autoloader for first time shooters. And I still don't have a 10/22 in my armory, a gaping hole that will need to be filled before I take Ross up on his generous offer to shoot in an Appleseed shoot.

I'm leaning towards a handgun for the simple fact that the last five firearms I've purchased have been longarms - I'm due for another pistol. But what to get? I, like JD, have some cash burning a hole in my pocket and nothing specific that I really want or need. I guess I'm just going to have to go to a random gun shop or two and see what jumps out at me.

Yeah, I know, it's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it...

That is all.

Buckmark .22 is pretty nice, Jay. Not too pricey, accurate, no recoil of course (last year took my 6-year-old shooting and he LOVED it - he loved loading the mag MORE which was great for me). Spent $20 on a top rail and $30 on a Tasco red dot. Cheap-ass tacticool plinker's delight.

Love love love love love my Ruger Mark III 22/45 with the slight exception that I can't change the grips on it.

My wife even enjoys shooting it!

There's an added bonus with the Ruger - Reassembly makes a Rubik's cube look simple. The posts you'd put up after cleaning would be worth every penny.

The Ruger I bought came with a top rail. I spent $35 on a red dot.

And for both the Buckmark and Ruger, get The Ultimate Cliploader (bad name, great product).

David,

Not on the list. The only ones around are old and/or extremely pricey (cheapest I've seen used is $400...)

Robb,

Heh. The 22/45 is on the short list because it's cheap and has the 1911 grip angle.

Problem is, I can't decide if I want another .22 or just a conversion kit...

I don't want a rail, though - my 422 has a mount with a red dot. I want iron on this one...

The sights on my Mark III are fiber optic and in the right light, almost appear to be projected.

Unfortunately, they also tend to go invisible in the wrong light, i.e. the range I shoot at.

Ruger Mk2. I have a blue one in iron and a stainless one with a dot, both 6+7/8".

There's a nice 10" stainless Mk2 for sale just down the road. It's tempting me every time I stroll by.

Thankfully, I live in the middle of Alabama and we have no sad / silly laws like MA, CA or DC microgoverning what firearm a person can buy. So, my list of potentials is a little more like this... Although it appears that most of these would likely be ok in MA, CA or DC anyway.

Remington Pump - 12 ga magnum marine if I can find one. Because a Saiga-12 is not a pump.

Taurus Judge - 3" 412 chambering in Titanium if I can find one. Because it is odd and I am odd... plus 45 LC in that small frame might be fun to shoot.

Various Manufacture - Pocket snub in .357 for those few days when an overgarment just doesn't work. Read, I can not conceal the PX4 sub or the XD 45. Plus, don't own a .357.

Own both a Mk II and a 10/22. Either is a great value. For most fun buy a 10/22 receiver and use Brownell or Midway catalog and build your own tack driver. Added points for telling you neighbors "This? I just built it in the garage this afternoon." PSH overload.

I'm looking at getting either a Glock 17 or 19 which I can easily find a conversion kit to .22 for range time. Unfortunately my Sig 239 can't be converted, so I have to look for something else. Well - that is what I tell myself and hubby anyway LOL!
