The 2A Blog Bash in Phoenix is coming up in a few weeks, and the list of attendees is quite impressive indeed. It's a veritable "Who's Who" in the gun blogosphere, from the educational Anarchangel, to the World's Most Dangerous Librarian, all the way to TD, alan, and most of the Gunblogger Conspiracy Crew.
Man, it sure would be sweet to attend...
Many factors contributed to my decision not to attend, the first and foremost being that our impending Disney trip has sucked most of the discretionary income out of the G. budget. The Saturday of the meeting is the yearly fundraising drive for our Cub Scout Pack, and it's generally poor form for the Cubmaster to miss the largest (and only) money-making event; even poorer to attend an NRA/2A event (I'm in MA, remember...) Not to mention Phoenix is a helluva long drive from MA, which would really necessitate me getting on an airplane - both expense and fear being a limiting factor...
But, as the expression goes, excuses are like assholes; everyone's got one, and even your own stinks...
Thinking about my true reasons for not attending, I'm struck by the same sort of apprehension that Breda writes about today. There's a good number of folks on the attendees list I've been reading for years; people whose writing and knowledge I respect and enjoy. Sure, it'd be cool as hell to listen to Kevin Baker pontificate, or to meet Sebastian and Bitter, or find a range somewhere with Cowboy Blob.
Who the hell am I to think I can run with the big dogs?
That is all.

oh please, Mr. More-Guns-Than-God.
Welcome to the pack. ;)
Who are you to think you can attend? LOL!
I read your blog. I don't read all the "luminaries" you mentioned.
The better question is "What the hell are podcasters coming for?" :P
You can run and woof with the best of them. Don't let that stop you.
Dam, who replaced Jay with a whiny little bitch?
Who the hell am I to think I can run with the big dogs?Who ever told you that you couldn't?
Now Just on raw numbers, none of us would qualify as a "big boy".
We're ALL third tier blogs in terms of traffic and exposure.
Thanks everyone. Didn't mean for it to come across as whiny (ahem); just a little moment of self-doubt...
And Chris? That may be technically true; but in my mind, y'all are *all* big dogs...
Eh, you are more than welcome to come down here and chill with me if you want, Jay.
We can wallow in our insignificance. And hit the range and shoot stuff.
I do believe this is the first time I've ever seen The Volokh Conspiracy rated as third tier. I guess that means that even with Glenn Reynolds, we never hit any top tier blogs last year. That's too bad.
But, that just goes to show you that you shouldn't be intimidated by anyone on this list if everyone is a third tier blog! :)
Kidding aside, it's not nearly as intimidating as you think. We get everyone who will take a sip drunk enough that everyone gets along just fine...
Breda, I don't count Volokh as a gun blog.
Yes, they cover a lot of gun issues, and lord knows most of us gun folks read Volokh, but gun blogging is a small percentage of their traffic and focus.
In terms of traffic, at 40k hits a day Volokh is around the top of the second tier.
Of course you could count insty and LGF as explicitly pro-gun, and they're both top 25 blogs (possibly top ten for LGF, and top 5 fopr Insty depending on how you count it).
There are a lot of explicitly pro-gun blogs in the top couple hundred of course; especially the top tier milbloggers.
None of them are primarily focused on gunblogging though.
My guess is that of straight gunblogs Unc is number one for traffic, at about 4,000 a day.
.. Well, 'cept maybe Cam Edwards. Dunno if he uses sitemeter, and his blog isn't loading for me right now.
Also I don't count the NRA official blogs.
At any rate, yeah that puts at least ALMOST all of us into the third tier of overall traffic.
In general, blog traffic (and other web site traffic) follows a powerlaw distribution curve, so the first two tiers are relatively small (the top 500 or so blogs), the third tier is considerably larger (about 10,000 or so, consisting of everyone with more than about 200 hits a day or so), and then everyone else is fourth tier or below.
Ooops, bitter. I was reading Breda as I was writing the comment.
Who the hell am I to think I can run with the big dogs?Hell, I was nervous as hell when I went last year, but I did it and had a good time.
I'm a tiny fish in the gun blogger pond compared to most of you.
Well, you are one of my favorite and regular reads. Definitely in the top 10.
So I think you should have gone. That's just my .22 cents.
