Fantasy Thought Exercise...

Okay, so I mentioned really digging Monster Hunter International... Not to give anything away in the story, but it did give me an idea for an interesting thought exercise. There's a scene towards the end where the Forces of Evil™ are gathering and the Big Climactic Battle Scene at the End of the Book is brewing. This is going to be the holy mother of all battles, with Our Heroes not likely to survive their encounter with the Forces of Evil™.

So here's the thought question, split into two parts: You're one of the Big Heroes at the End the Book. You're preparing for the Battle Grande with the Forces of Evil™. What firepower are you going to bring with you? Part A: The Sky's the limit - personal weaponry only, but everything goes. Full auto, suppressed, SBR, what have you. Part B: Your personal armory/what you can easily get ahold of.

Part A. The Sky's the Limit.

Of course, an M203 Grenade launcher (with grenade bandolier, natch) mounted to an M4 would be the first weapon of choice, engaging the Forces of Evil™ at distance. For a main firearm, though, there's little reason to opt for anything less than belt-fed. Sure, an M240 would be cumbersome and somewhat hard to haul around, but 600 rounds of 7.62X51mm is going to put the hurt on the Forces of Evil™ something fierce. Once empty, the aforementioned M4 with beta-mags and a micro-Uzi.

For handheld weapons, it'd have to be a G21 with spare 15 round mags, a Colt Anaconda, and the Smith & Wesson 360PD as the last-ditch BUG. Add in a true katana and wakisashi and a Ka-Bar for edged weaponry, and the battle she shall be on. Oh, and one last thing... When the guns are empty; when the blades have shattered and the Forces of Evil™ close in, one last surprise...

Part B. The G. armory.

This is an easier list to compile. The main arm would be the Bushmaster with all those magazines loaded and the ITM AK clone for backup. The Mossberg 590 loaded with slugs (and bayonet fixed, of course) would round out the long guns, but if I could spare one more, the Turk Mauser (again, with bayonet affixed) would be a hard-hitting long-range option.

Handguns would also be straightforward. The G30 with 15 round G21 magazines would be the primary handgun after the longarms are exhausted. The S&W Model 629 provides long(er) range big bore goodness. And the Snubbie from Hell™ would be the last-ditch BUG. For edged weaponry, the United Cutlery bowie and the bat'leth. Yes. My last moments on this earth fighting the dreaded minions of evil would employ a fictional weapon with a very real edge (I would sharpen it for the battle; it is currently non-edged).

So... What makes your lists?

That is all.

M-19 on a roll-around mount - feeding from a back-pack carying 100 rounds of willy-pete/powdered-silver mix. Think big, heh.

Are you on offense or defense? I like your M240 idea on defense; offense, not so much. 600 rounds is a few minutes shooting, and weighs a LOT.

;-)

Jay G said...

Definitely defense. We'll leave offense to the heavy artillery and rockets...

I eschewed the 1200 round can for just that reason (too heavy). I figure if the Forces of Evil™ are coming to rip my spine out of my body and suck my eyeballs out of my head, I can live with the minor discomfort caused by lugging around heavy ordnance...

Part A: AA12, M16 (20"), 1911s, and a handful of frags.

Part B: 870, AR15 (20"), 1911, S&W 21-4, and as much bad breath as I can come up with.

Battle Rifle: a Kel-Tec RFB (if they work as well as Kel Tec and Oleg Volk say) and bandoleer of Mags.

Mossberg 590 with Bayo fixed for Room-broom goodness.

Primary handgun a Custom STI 2011 in 10mm Auto

Glock 29 as Ultimate Hold-out gun.

Blade: Ka-Bar Fighting Knife

Ride: A Hummer H1 with an M2 in the turret would probably grant me a stylish entrance

IRL: Battle Rifle: SKS (bandoleer of Clips)
Shotgun: Same as Above
Primary Handgun: S&W1911 Stainless 5"
Holdout Gun: S&W 642 and S&W638

Blade: Ka-Bar TDI Fighting Knife.

Ride: Ford Ranger 4x4, with probably a few more guns and bladed weapons stuffed in it for more specialty stuff (Fire Axes, a Scoped Rifle, crates of ammo ect)

A)If the sky's really the limit... at least start with a few redback weapon systems... but more along your lines of list:

HK 21E, HK416 in 14.5in barrel config, with a x4 ACOG and a metalstorm 3GL under the barrel, and a backing that up, an MP7. Sig-Saur P226 in .357 sig with extra 12 round mags, a super blackhawk in .454 cassul, and I think I'll steal your idea of the 360PD for BUG. Blade-wise, I'll opt for a 2½lb cut&thrust longsword balanced an inch out from the hilt(finesse weapon), wakizashi, and a tanto. (Yes I skip the katana, I'm not far enough into my martial arts training to use one effectively)

I'll skip listing a part B) option because it's depressing.

I honestly am counting the seconds till I get me copy of MHI. Hell I even bought one of the patches.

Keep them at bay rifle: Not quite sure. I'm thinking something along the lines of the Mk11 Mod0 SWS. I like quick follow up shots.

Up close and personal rifle: SBR AR pattern gun (mil spec lower with a La Rue 7in upper and 11.5 barrel) chambered in .458 SOCCOM loaded with Speer "holy shit you could mix a drink in that hollow point" rounds, Magpul CTR stock and MIAD grip, EOTech 553 with La Rue mount, A.R.M.S. folding front and rear sights, Surefire Millennium weapon light, and a suppressor (no idea who makes a .458 SOCCOM can).

Shotgun: The Benelli M4 Super 90 with a cut down 14inch barell and side folder M4 style stock (think Sig 556) sitting in a sheath on my left leg.

OR if we really want to go for broke on the ass kickery, a twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. Made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. Cut the barrels down as much as possible and we'll be good to go.

Sidearms: STI 2011 Tactical 5.0 (black hole magwell and all) with one of those trick ass MHI grips that Larry just got, rebuilt to handle .45 Super (230gr JHP moving at 9mm speeds? Yes please) on the drop rig right thigh, and somewhere on the vest a Colt Python with some Houge grips for the "holy shit he is taking on the end of the world with a six gun" factor (it is a fantasy after all)

For sharp pointy objects: Mercworx Equatorian with the sheath mounted on the back side of whatever vest I'm using, and a Mercworx Shiva ziptied to the drop rig for the STI.

I work a dead end job at the General, and between bouts of trying to fight my way out of this hell hole, I have to do something to stay occupied.

I would for sure want one of the six shot revolver grenade launchers I saw on the mil channel last night. And a Beowolf upper for the AR... .50 cal goodness indeed....

Gentlemen,

Today I know that I have obviously reached my target audience. :D

I'm probably the first writer that went with 81mm mortar fire for use against vampires.

Wow... a comment from the Master!!

Part A: OK, if we assume that I'm limited to things I can USE (Otherwise I'd be in a Blackhawk helicopter!), I think I'd go with an M1A, with a nice variety of ammo (AP, tracer, etc) depending on what type of monster I was expecting to reach. Shotgun - Rem 870 with extended tube.
Handgun: Para P14-45.
BUG - COP-4 in .357 Magnum - even if I run out of ammo, I can still beat the fuckers to death with it, which you CAN'T do with the Snubbie from Hell, Jay!

Part B:
M1 Garand, with bayonet.
Mossberg 500
Handgun? Got an interesting choice here. Given that this is a FANTASY milieu, I'd probably go with my Model 19 rather than the Ruger Redhawk. Why? Because the 19 was my FIRST gun... and if there IS magic in the world, I'd have to assume that my first gun, the gun that I sold to my sworn brother, then moved heaven and earth until I got it BACK, would have some sort of mystical attachment to me, and therefore would be a better choice than the 1911 or the .44 Mag Redhawk.
BUG: 2" bbl Model 19. (I like K-frames, OK?)
Blade - Falcon Arms shortsword - 2 feet of double-edged razor-sharp spring steel.
Shield - 30" heater shield made of T-6 aircraft grade aluminum.
Last ditch knife - custom knife made by Shadowmaker of Carillon.

Fantasy thought exercise? I wanna play!

Long Range: Bolt action 308 w/ detachable magazine and a Night force scope.
Medium Range:16" AR in 6.8 SPC w/ iron sights
Short Range: Red Ryder BB gun with silver BB's
Kukri!
From the Sig Boy arsenal:

Custom 338/06 w/ Leupold scope.
16" AR in 223
Remington 870, speed feed stock, side saddle, +2 tube, 20" Barrel w/ rifle sights (thats 17 on/in the firearm)
STI 2011 in 40 or SIG 226 in 40, tough call. Somebody pick for me.
John Roy custom tactical knife and a Cold Steel SRK
Leatherman Wave, you know, for pulling teeth.

Part A:
I'm thinking something in 40MM, one of those big revolving grenade launchers, for "at-a-distance" type stuff.
Rifle: A DSA FAL Carbine, with tracer, silver, WP, and AP rounds in various magazines, and a good reflex sight.
Sidearms: Matched pair of 1911's, with a few custom touches. Nothing like a New York Reload. All the mags I could carry, of course.
BUG: S&W 38. I'm old fashioned about my snubs.

All this after I'd drank some colloidal silver and eaten a clove or two of garlic, of course.

Rick in NY said...

Now, this assumes we're loading "useful" ammo, ie, silver in it somehow.

Part A:

Knight SR25 - 7.62x51, with a 40mm grenade launcher, crossed bandoliers of mags and 40mm.

Ithaca Model 37 12 ga. shotgun with a mag extension.

Pair of GI spec 1911s.

Wakizashi and a Ka-Bar.

Part B:

8mm Mauser, lots of stripper clips.

Ithaca Model 37 12ga. shotgun.

GI Spec 1911.

68 caliber, single shot, flintlock black powder pistol. Because I can.

Ka-Bar.

And, shamelessly stealing this one from Jay, Johnsered 550 chainsaw.

A. I'd go with a M203 mounted on a full length M16 (NOT an M4), because back in the day I really was That Damn Good. I consistently fired Expert, and in free fire scenarios could stand it on it's butt and mortar fire grenades into a trench line at maximum range.

B. Mossberg 500, with a S&W M19 for backup. I have them on hand, and more importantly a plentiful supply of ammo.

Or am I being too practical here?

Haven't read the book (yet), but if we're rubbing the Genie's bottle, then I'll stick with my post-apocalyptic loadout, most of which I have on my wall already http://www.dmancini.com/pictures/swords/Image01.jpg - Winchester lever action for distance, SA Ruger for close-up, the pump shotgun in my duffel with gobs of ammo, and my katana near to hand. And I'd probably want a silver-headed boar spear or something.

"But Atom," you're saying "that's not enough firepower!" And you'd be right, except that you let me rub the Genie's bottle, so I brought Salma Hayek and Odalys Garcia along to reload for me and sing Barsoomian war songs.

WOW! With The Author reading!?! No eff'n pressure at all!
PART A:
Longarm; AR with a belt fed upper so I can do a Full Rambo. A M203 underneath.
Handgun; hi-cap 1911
Edged Weapon: Cold Steels M1917 cutlass. Left fuller inlayed with silver. Right fuller inlayed with oak from a tree struck by lightening on Samhain (Holloween). See? Working at a New Age store comes in handy.
PART B:
Longarm: M1A with bayonet.
Sidearm: 1911 Gold Cup
Edged: Khukri

Silly civilians.

Part A. - already did it.
I rode into Kuwait in '91 as the God of War. We were Jolly Green Giants walking the Earth killing everything in our path.

I had an M16 of course, a case of frags, and a LAW rocket in my Humvee. My partner had an M203 on his 16 with both frags and WP grenades. Enough about the small shit. Our real weapons were our radios.

I was on a Forward Air Control Team. On the other end of our radios at our beck and call were:
- Super Cobras with Hellfire missiles and Gatling guns.
- 155mm and 8-inch artillery batteries - including copperhead shells that would hit anything I illuminated with my laser.
- Dozens US Navy and Marine Corps attack planes waiting for our call - Harriers, Hornets, A-6 Intruders and A-7 Corsairs. All loaded up with different types of missiles and cluster bombs.
- And, every Marine's favorite, 2 Iowa class battleships with 16-inch naval guns.

My favorite munition – Fuel Air Explosive bombs (FAE). They spray a explosive fuel aerosol mixture over an area then ignite it. A 1km kill radius from crushing over-pressure and burns.

Those were the days.

Part B.
I would take the HK21E somebody mentioned earlier. It's a good 7.62 machine gun the fires from the closed bolt – so it's much more accurate than the M60 or M249. Put a scope on it and it's a decent sniper rifle. It can fire mags or belts.

I stink with pistol so I would chose a small SMG like the MP5K as a back-up. I guess I'm crude because my favorite edged weapon is a sharpened e-tool.

The REALLY sad part? I actually designed the parameters for a rifle to be used by a cryptozoologist...

M1 Garand (8 rds of 30-06, easily reloaded). Slung under the barrel, a tranq gun (do you REALLY need to kill the thing, or just tag it?). Mounted on either side of the barrel, a wireless camera (transmitting to "base camp) and a dual mode light (visible and IR) Aimpoint red dot sight on top, set up to cowitness with nightvision if necessary.

The idea behind the setup came while watching a Discovery piece on some folks looking for China's version of Bigfoot. The tranq gun would be the first "shot" fired, with hopes that you could then inspect and "tag" the critter. However, if that tranq didn't work fast enough, and the bugger charged...

I'm pretty sure 8 rds of 30-06 would put most approximately man-size critters down. If not, the next 8 are FAR easier to get into play than a standard detachable box...

Sidearm> Whatever you want, so long as it's .357 or larger, and double-action...

What the Hell, I'll bite.

A. A SAW with M193 loaded and a radio talking to the A-10 orbiting above. Would 30MM work?

B. Enfield loaded with the 180 grainers. Remington 870 with #00 buck on the MOLLE scabbard. Glock 17L with the 17 rounders. My personally blessed Kukri and the Varhammer for backup.
