I've been thinking of a 9mm carbine, so a Kel-Tec Sub2000 that takes Sig 226 mags is a possibility. Then again, so's a cheap-assed Hi-Point 995 with the Beretta Storm lookalike stock. AK clones are starting to come back down to earth, it would be nice to pick up a functioning model. The new Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 looks kick-ass. And I still don't own a 10/22...
For pistols, I've got a line on a CZ-50, which intrigues me because I don't have anything chambered in .32 ACP. However the C&R eligible CZ-82 is starting to dry up, so prices may be going up. And I really want to get a decent .22LR semi-automatic that's a little more reliable than my S&W 422 (great gun, but jams, and that's not good for teaching new shooters) - thinking a Ruger Mark III or 22/45.
On the "save up a little more" front, I'd like another semi-auto rifle in .308, preferably one that doesn't take mags made from compressed unicorn tears. An M1 Garand or functioning M1 Carbine would be a welcome (and needed) addition to the armory. Something with longer reach - bolt action .308 with decent glass - is also currently missing. The Walther PPS in .40 S&W would make an excellent carry piece, as would a S&W 442.
*sigh* So many guns, so little discretionary income...
That is all.

Gun ADD, gotta tell that one to the wife....
Jay, here's the description of what I'm currently pursuing. I need/want a lightweight rifle for camping and backpacking, but still want enough oomph to hunt with.
I'm planning on a semi-custom job. Take a NEF Handi-Rifle in 357 magnum, rechamber it to 357 maximum, trim the barrel to 16-1/2", install a Williams peep and Firesight. Buy or build a lightweight fiberglass stock with storage compartment. Lastly, replace the hinge pin with a takedown pin. I'm hoping to have a 3 to 4 lb rifle capable of shooting 38 specials, 357 mags, and 357 maxs, yet will break down and store in a backpack.
Should be just the ticket. Like you said, so many rifles, so little disposable income....
"And I really want to get a decent .22LR semi-automatic that's a little more reliable than my S&W 422 "
Heh, I'll be bringing a little Jennings that is surprisingly reliable to the shoot...you might like it ; ]
I've brought that little bugger to the range every time I teach a new shooter since I acquired it.
Hopefully my '82 will be in for the shoot, I'll be picking up some 9x18 for it tonight.
Oh and good luck with the PPS in 40, sofar only the 9x19 one is Mass Approved. I'm heading to Collector's tonight and they had a few in stock last week. If you bring some FA-10s I'm more than willing to grab one for ya. Do you still have my cell #?
Rick,
I can understand the appeal of the pistol-caliber carbine, certainly, but wouldn't it be cheaper just to get a NEF Handi-Rifle in .30-30?
Don't get me wrong: "Because I want one" is a PERFECTLY valid reason for doing, well, pretty much anything.
I've seen a Dan Wesson (I think) chambered in .357 Maximum; from what I can recall the rounds are about as rare as unscripted apologies from 0bama... ;)
Weerd,
I'm glad that little J-22 is working out for you! I want something full-size, though; something that won't require three men and a boy to draw the slide back... ;)
As for the PPS in .40, I'll wait - remember, this was in the "save up a little more" category... But thanks.
Bummer, I was looking at the PPS 9mm the other day and ALMOST liked it enugh, but I had enugh reservations to leave it in the case (and spend my duckets on the CZ a half-case of ammo, and still have change for Blogger Shoot ammo), but I was hoping I could maybe bring it home for just a few nights ; ]
Jay, you are correct that getting factory 357 max ammo is just to the left of unpossible.
Reloading, however, is a whole 'nother ballgame. Midway, Grafs, etc have the brass on hand I'd say 90% of the times I've checked. Being a straight-wall case there is no stretching, so good brass lasts almost indefinitly. And as to getting 357 instead of 30-30, well, the old 30-30 is a bit much for squirrels, and being even slighly bottlenecked, you can't load shotshells. With a 357max I cna load light 38s for small critters, 357 mags for mediums, and 357 maxs for deer and such. Plus I can take a max case and load it like a small shotgun shell.
There's a lot of versatility there, plus I won't need new dies and bullets to reload it. And, frankly, yes, it's what I've always wanted too. It's the (in my mind) perfect jack-of-all-trades rifle for my backpacking trips.
Gotta see if I can make the barrel and action store inside the stock like the old AR-7.
I'd go with either of the Ruger 22's - or both. Not too expensive, great for new shooters and you already have the ammo to feed 'em. And probably one of the few guns you'll never get rid of.
Oh, and caleb tripped my Gun ADD with his S&W 625 posts.
I'm not a revolver guy at all, but I have a 45acp fetish and nothing says 'sexy' like a big hunk of stainless.
I'm trying very hard to repress the Gun ADD right now - that whole "new house" thing.
I packed the gun cases for the trip this morning, you'll be glad to know the 22/45 and the 995 are both in.
Along with a damn boatload of ammo... :D
Been there, done that, re: the whole gun ADD thing. Big thumbs up on the descriptor, BTW.
The problem, as I've experienced it, is that I've apparently got a much better memory than any other evidence would indicate. Decades of gun crankiness have resulted im me reading all kinds of reviews (both old and of the "classic" variety) along with articles that praised some oddball creation in passing and the odd photo of something especially toothsome that was the subject of a long stare and a muttered "Someday..." I can't remember any of these in advance, they just sit somewhere in my subconscious like a shark lurking just beneath the surface, until I'm minding my own business at a gunshop or show and I'm suddenly blindsided by something I RECOGNIZE AS BEING KEWL and always wanted but didn't remember until RIGHT NOW...
Here's a chance to learn from one of my many mistakes in that regard: Loudly exclaiming "OMG, it's a Standard!" when first identifying an old Standard Arms Model G (dual mode gas operated semiauto/pump rifle from a company that was out of business before we entered WWI) on a gun show table from about a full table's length away is NOT going to put one in good bargaining position.
I'm hopeful that someday I reach the end of subconscious memory's want list. It'd do my family's financial security a world of good. Or maybe I don't so wish; gotta keep something to look forward to or life won't be nearly so interesting anymore.
