In a video posted Monday (July 20) on BeastieBoys.com, Adam "MCA" Yauch announced that he has cancer and the group is canceling all upcoming shows (and pushing back the release of their Hot Sauce Committee, Part One album) while he receives treatment for it.
Now, the "feeling old" part has nothing to do with MCA's cancer announcement. Hell, most of the bands I listened to as a teen have had some sort of death, let alone disease - Jerry Garcia, half the Ramones, Kurt Cobain, Grandmaster J... It was actually seeing an updated picture as opposed to the mind's eye view from 1987. Take a good look at the Beastie Boys - they're friggin' middle aged dudes still trying to party down like 20-somethings (and granted, that's their schtick and they've made good coin with it; more power to 'em says I!)
It just made me feel old, is all; it's made even worse by knowing that there are many folks out there acting like that IRL who *aren't* getting paid big bucks by a record company for acting that way. Everybody knows someone (or someones) like that; the perennial "party boy/girl" who never outgrew the "day without a buzz is a day that never was" philosophy. And with the advent of FaceBook, we can reconnect with these perpetual Peter Pans at the speed of light...
Sometimes I think the Luddites might have the right idea...
That is all.

Man, I do love that "hide" feature for FB. Does everyone everyone has an extended family member or old teen chummette (always female) who thinks that it is imperative that they make hourly entries on their FB page, with shocking things like "went to the store" or their ranging emotions over John leaving Kate? I'm no less mundane than the next person, but > 6 nonsensical entries EVERY.DARN.DAY tells me that there are a lotta housewives with empty time on their hands....

I outgrew them a long time ago, and never looked back. I used to have (notice the past tense) a buddy who I had had been best friends with since my teens. He got married before me, but didn't settle down. Actually got mad because after working 12hr days I wanted to go home and sleep, or go see my girlfriend, rather then "hang out" with him. Seems like a lot of my friends from my teens and 20s have never grown up. Still out partying. Still getting into trouble. Got no use for them, not even on FaceBook. I just went and check, out of 66 friends on FB, only 6 are non-family members that I've known longer then 20yrs. Of those 6 only one falls into the PeterPan class. I kinda let him slide, since we've been friends for over 30yrs (holy crap, now THAT makes me feel old!) and that's just the way he is. Not a party animal by any means; just never grew up. Owns a house, but rents it out and still lives with mommy and daddy. Has NEVER had a serious long-term relationship. Works just enough to pay the bills until he strikes it rich. I don't feel old, but I have a family, and a mortgage, and a car payment. I also have a fair amount of toys. I'm far from rich, but really there isn't much that I want and don't have. I can't even imagine risking all that by doing all the stupid things I did in my youth.
When Mozart was my age, he'd been dead 17 years ...
