No, Really, Pull The Other One...

Officials: Obama to tap FBI to interrogate terrorists
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama hs approved the establishment of a special unit of terrorist interrogators based out of the FBI, senior administration officials said Monday.

The move comes in the wake of criticism of questionable CIA interrogation techniques, such as waterboarding and the transfer of detainees to countries where torture is common.

Right, because the FBI has such a lengthy track record of respect for civil rights, right? Why, let's ask the folks at the Koresh compound about that. Oh, wait, we can't, because the FBI barbequed their asses and lied about it for six fucking years...

0bama really can't be this clueless, can he?

That is all.

"0bama really can't be this clueless, can he?"

That is a rhetorical question, I assume.

Wait, what?

Weren't a lot of the CIA interrogations in question conducted OUTSIDE the US?

Last time I checked, it is illegal for the FBI to operate outside the US unless they are doing so in conjunction with, and at the invitation of, a local law enforcement organization.

So now they're going to have to transport these suspected terrorists back to the US first, and lose potentially valuable time in the process? Or I wonder if they'll argue that a US-controlled military base is sufficient to grant the FBI investigatory powers.

JD,

Heh.

BobG,

Yeah, at this stage of the game the question is pretty much rhetorical...

Matt,

Good catch. Of course, it could also mean that 0bama's going to have the terrorists held on US soil, something he's waffled on in the past...

Like Obama's policies are going to result in the capture of any new terrorists. Frankly this is like me making a list of Elizabeth Hurley's favorite bedtime snacks.

It's worse than that. From the article:

"...The interagency High Value Detainee Interrogation Group will be overseen by the National Security Council and "draw on interrogators from defense, intelligence, and law enforcement," a senior administration official said...

In other words, the new interrogation unit is answerable solely to the White House, since the NSC is staffed by presidential appointees. Which bypasses all the constraints previously put on intelligence agencies by both Congress and the Executive Branch to prevent the politicization and "spinning" of intelligence...and suggests at least the possibility, with the inclusion of domestic law enforcement, that even US citizens might end up being targeted for interrogation due to political, rather than intelligence, objectives.

Gosh, what could go wrong?

Next, no doubt, an "interrogation czar."

So, to sum up: Obama's Justice Department is unleashing a special prosecutor on the CIA to investigate alleged "torture" by the CIA (with the obvious ultimate goal of indicting and prosecuting Bush Administration officials) on the very same day Obama himself announces he's establishing his very own band of interrogators, and doing so in a way that sidesteps Congressional oversight and stomps all over posse comitatus.

And, also, this is happening on the very day that Obama is also reestablishing the practice of rendition regarding terrorist suspects. Which Obama himself repeatedly derided as allegedly inhumane and a violation of civil rights.

Whatever happens with Obama's interrogation policy, the fact is that the Democrats now totally own the national security issue.

And this one is going to come back to bite them. Hard. Too bad it'll bite the nation as well...
