8 Years Ago, Part 4

The south tower of the World Trade Center collapses.

The collapse was the moment when the horror truly hit me. As an EMT and EMS provider, I knew that every firefighter, medic, and cop that ran into those buildings did so knowing that they could collapse - and did it anyway, because the one thought running through the mind of every single one of them was "we need to help these people."

In that one moment, every single one of them still in that building died.

Even as I knew they had died, I couldn't let go of the vain hope that the evac order had been given soon enough that they had all gotten out - and I knew that there had to be some who had ignored the order just to get one more person out.

"All gave some, some gave all."

I had taken the Path train to Trade Center for a meeting a few weeks earlier so it was fresh in my mind how huge a footprint those buildings had. They were a city block each.

Somebody at work told me a tower had collapsed. I couldn't wrap my mind around it and was convinced she was talking about the radio antenna at the top. I was stunned when I got to a TV and saw that the WHOLE BUILDING was f-ing gone.
