Ask Professor Know-It-All: Gunnie Acronyms & Abbreviations!

One of the suggestions in the last APKIA segment was the following from commenter Bruce B.:

For the true newbies, define the acronyms/abbreviations you use. I'm as guilty of acronym/abbreviation speak as anyone. We use them without thinking about it but one who isn't familiar is left searching for definitions
What a fantastic idea! In that spirit, here goes!

In the interests of accuracy I only see a couple of acronyms on your list. That is, initials that make a word. e.g. "GOAL". Even BAR is pronounced B-A-R not as "bar". This maddening trend to create initials for everything (MTTCIFE) without reference to the original meaning was started by the high tech people and has spread. Unfortunately it will only increase as the language lapses into text messages.

NICS

oh yeah, 4473 not an acronym, but still important for the newbie

(PBUH)-(Peace Be Unto/Upon Him), is in your list but unexplained. And in line with NFA(34), how about GCA(68), the Gun Control Act? ATF could be expanded to BATFE, but otherwise I think you've got a pretty good gunnie list started.

I live my life in acronyms and abbreviations (high-tech MILITARY), so while I could add more, there's not much point.

Where's "EBR"?

libertyman, noted and added, thanks

Top of the Chain,

Ooh, good 'uns

NICS: National Instant Check System
4473: Form used for firearms background check

jetfxr69,

PBUH is not precisely a gunnie term, hence why it wasn't defined.

And GCA is on the list between FMJ and GOA...

wolfwalker,

Another good 'un!

EBR: Evil Black Rifle

No BRD ?

BOHICA

TEOTWAWKI

BOB bag or the GTHOOD bag

Jay G said...

Wally,

Okay, BRD stumps even me.

T-bolt,

*sigh*

TEOTWAWKI is on the list, right in between SMG and WC.

It's in Revelations, people!

BOB (Bug Out Bag) is a good edition. I think GTHOOD (Get The Hell Out Of Dodge) is a little more esoteric (and takes longer to type...)

PSH...;)

How could you leave off WECSOG?

Jay G said...

OOH, two more good choices!

PSH: Pants-Shitting Hysteria
WECSOG: Wile E. Coyote School Of Gunsmithing

Keep 'em coming everyone!!!

HCP: Handgun Carry Permit (as it's called in TN and some other states)
JPFO: Jews for the Preservation of Firearm Ownership

Charlie Foxtrot and Tango Uniform might bear some explanation, too!

BRD : Black Rifle Disease

From the mind of Kim (KDT), we now have National Ammo Day, The Pussification of the Western Male, and one of the greatest gun-related acronyms, GFW, for gun fearing wussy.
I think it was Kim who also coined the previously mentioned PSH.

pajamaverse covered HCP. How about DRT (Dead Right There, as in "good goblin"). I got that one from Neal Boortz.

You got LTC, but you missed ALP (All Lawful Purposes). Did you skip that one because in Mass now "ALP" has be replaced by "Restrictions: None"?
