Interesting...

Same-sex marriage bill voted down in New York Senate
(CNN) -- Gov. David Paterson pledged to keep fighting for same-sex marriage in New York after the state Senate on Wednesday killed a bill that would have legalized the practice.

The bill had Paterson's support and had passed the state Assembly. Supporters predicted a close vote going into Wednesday's Senate debate. But eight of Paterson's fellow Democrats, including two members of the Senate leadership, joined a unanimous Republican caucus on the 38-24 vote.

Interesting that NY killed gay marriage whereas nasty ol' right wing haven New Hampshire did not...

For the record, I don't think government should ban same-sex marriages. I'd prefer it if government stayed the hell out of the marriage business entirely, truth be told. Barring that, though, I see no reason whatsoever to protect keep homosexuals from getting married.

And I can't resist the snark on the low-hanging fruit here:
In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Paterson said, "It is always darkest before the dawn.

How would he know?

(Yes, I freely admit, I'm going to hell for that bit...)

That is all.

I agree - Get rid of it, and simplify the whole thing with legal unions.

Either that, or just leave it the way it's been, since that would mean less government spending.

Or allow polygamy, or multi-party civil unions, because leaving it at just two people seems hypocritical, somehow. Almost like the gay marriage movement is more about politics than it is about civil liberties, as claimed. Hmmm...

Agreed... the only thing the State should have to worry about is whether or not the couple payed their marriage license fee, and was married buy a licensed officiant. Then all the gay folks out there can find out the INTENSE JOY AND COMPLETE LACK OF FRUSTRATION that all of us happily married / engaged straight folks experience.
