"Kennedy's Seat"

It was pointed out earlier, but this is particularly galling:

Coakley, Brown to vie for Kennedy's Senate seat

It's not Kennedy's Senate seat. It's the Senate seat for Massachusetts. Ted Kennedy no more owned that seat than I did; he just got in early and dug in like a tick. For the media to perpetuate this falsehood is understandable; they've been covering for Fat Ted since, well, his submarine experiment in the Oldsmobile. It's a foregone conclusion that, even after his death, that seat will be referred to as his. They're the media. Covering for the Dems is what they do.

I mean, hell, when you've had your nose up the Democratic party's ass as long as they have, pretty much everything starts smelling like feces.

That is all.

I agree with you on ole Teddy Boy, but there is a reason that the senate seats are referred to as belonging to a senator.

In the senate, there are seats that have been there since the early days of the country. Senate Tradition is to have a senators name inscribed / carved in the drawer of the desk which the senator claims when he first takes office. That desk remains his, and will be physically moved closer to the dias as the senator gains seniority, but the desk, for all intents and purposes, remains his until his (or her) departure.

Ergo, the tradition of referring to a seat (which actually refers to the desk) as belonging to the last senator to *own* the desk.

Granted...they should have just tossed his Oldsmobile in the senate chamber and made him use that, but I can appreciate tradition. If nothing else, the next senator to occupy the seat (if he is Republican) might be reminded every day of the low-life that occupied the desk before him, so as to serve as a constant reminder of what a good senator *isn't*...

It's Paul Kirk's seat (as he's the one sitting in it) Soon it will be Scott Brown's seat, because he's the one that's not the corrupt idiot.

From your lips to G-d's ear, Weerd...

Thanks for the history lesson, AP.

It should be Teddy's seat. In the oldsmobile.

I heard an interview with Brown (on Howie's show) and he Brown seemed to be incredibly mamby pamby, even knowing howie's audience leans left. I was unimpressed.

Brown seems as if he could redefine RINO and take the spotlight from Collins & Snow

Hey Jay,

No history lesson intended...apologies if it came off that way. I guess I try to cling to whatever traditions are left in our gov't, seeing that most politicians could give a rats arse about tradition or the Constitution in general.

Patriot,

I was being serious - I love learning the stories behind the stories.

No offense taken/inferred anything like that. If anything, feel free to chime in more!
