Complacency Is Not An Option

Massachusetts: 'Bottom has fallen out' of Coakley's polls; Dems prepare to explain defeat, protect Obama

Here in Massachusetts, as well as in Washington, a growing sense of gloom is setting in among Democrats about the fortunes of Democratic Senate candidate Martha Coakley. "I have heard that in the last two days the bottom has fallen out of her poll numbers," says one well-connected Democratic strategist. In her own polling, Coakley is said to be around five points behind Republican Scott Brown. "If she's not six or eight ahead going into the election, all the intensity is on the other side in terms of turnout," the Democrat says. "So right now, she is destined to lose."

Intensifying the gloom, the Democrat says, is the fact that the same polls showing Coakley falling behind also show President Obama with a healthy approval rating in the state. "With Obama at 60 percent in Massachusetts, this shouldn't be happening,
but it is," the Democrat says.

Years from now, when they examine "Horrible Political Campaigns", this one will be the very first one they study. It's got it all: A candidate who assumed they owned the position; the plucky underdog who wouldn't give up; the importance of getting yourself out there and meeting people vs. attending high-priced Washington fundraisers. It might even displace George HW Bush's campaign in 1992 as the worst ever.

This definitely isn't the time for Brown and his supporters to get complacent - and it certainly seems like we aren't. I've seen about 25-30 Brown signs for every Coakley sign - and that includes some pretty liberal areas I've been through. I've talked to dozens of folks who have stepped up to hold signs, call people, etc. If there's one thing the Brown campaign does not lack, it's people willing to step up and help out.

Coakley's campaign, OTOH, has to pay people to hold signs - people who admit they're voting for Brown.

GO SCOTT GO!!!

That is all.

HOPE

We haz it.

But I'm still not assuming anything. I won't be at all surprised if Coakley pulls it off. Really disappointed, but not surprised. Like I just said over at Bruce's, in politics the scumbags generally win over the decent guy, because the scumbags will do anything to win and the decent guy has a limit. And we're still talking about Massachusetts, which sent the Drunk Slob to Congress over and over for forty years, and John Effing Kerry for the last twenty.

Scott Brown is the only second candidate I've ever given money to.

Teh Fred was the first.

wolfwaker (and T-bolt),

I'm with you guys. I won't really start to believe a Brown victory until Coakley has conceded and Brown is being sworn in.

I put nothing past this bunch...

libertyman,

We can only hope. The fact that the race is this close should send a pretty strong message in and of itself - Coakley, by all rights, should be stomping Brown like a narc at a biker rally...

Thanks Did It MY way!

Bruce,

Brown is the first politician I've ever given money to.

He's also the first politician I'm voting for, as opposed to every other election where I've either voted against the other candidate or for the lesser of two evils...
