Pull The Other One, It's Got Bells On It...

For 5th term, vow of change

Thomas M. Menino, the 67-year-old urban mechanic who rose to power 16 years ago when his predecessor left for an ambassadorship, took the oath of office yesterday for an unprecedented fifth four-year term with a vow to open City Hall to new ways of thinking.

Speaking to hundreds of supporters and civic leaders gathered at historic Faneuil Hall, the mayor called the moment a new beginning for him.

1. WTF is an "urban mechanic"? I'd be shocked if Mumbles even knew what end of an automobile contained the engine, let alone worked on one.

2. Saying that Tom Menino - who is starting his fifth term as mayor of Boston - is going to be an agent of change is like saying that Tiger Woods is going to be an agent of marital fidelity, folks. Menino is so entrenched in the "do it again, only harder" camp that he views "thinking outside the box" as getting something other than a Happy Meal for lunch...

I love this:
During his speech at the inauguration, Menino repeatedly vowed to improve the city’s public schools, whose shortcomings have prompted many residents to move out of the city and others to opt for charter schools, private schools, or parochial schools.

Mayor Menino, you have been the mayor for sixteen years. You've had the chance to improve on these schools for the better part of two freakin' decades, yet they're still in as bad a shape as the day you first slithered into office. Crime is still rampant in Boston, yet all he can propose are hackneyed gun control proposals that even his supporters agree will only hurt law-abiding gun owners. The man hasn't had an idea in his head that didn't originate with a fax from DNC headquarters.

How's this knee-slapper?
“A new approach is called for on the waterfront, one that is both more deliberate and more experimental,’’ Menino said. “Together, we should develop these thousand acres into a hub for knowledge workers and creative jobs.’’

I know! How about if you raise taxes? That's always worked to stimulate businesses in the past, right? I mean, it's not like MA is so concerned about losing population that they're trying to game the census, right? It's not like so many people are fleeing the oppressive and overbearing state government that we're in danger of losing a congressional seat (oh dream of dreams)...

Just raise taxes and ban some more stuff, that'll show everyone you're trying new things...

That is all.

Euphemism for Social Engineer...but that term smacks of Hitler et al.

Menino has changed the social structure of Boston by having 80% of the Population work for the city/state or cash checks from it.

Every time Mumbles is on the Radio the Mrs. Screeches "HOW DO PEOPLE KEEP ELECTING THIS GUY?"

I wonder if his 'more experimental' approach to the waterfront involves business. So far, all he's done is to buy failing businesses, rename them as divisions of MASSPORT, to continue as before, or lease them at a loss to his buddies from the Italian-American club who got spanked for fraud during the Big Dig. I mean, c'mon, at least Buddy Cianci sort of looked legit.
