(CNN) -- Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Indiana, said Monday afternoon that he won't seek a third term in the Senate -- a major blow to Democrats worried about losses in the midterm elections.Let me translate into non-politician-speak: We read the polls and realized we were about to take an ass-whupping of Marsha Coakley proportions and decided to get out while the getting was good. I love how they cite a poll from November as evidence that Bayh's not retiring to avoid getting beaten. November, that was three months ago. It was pre-Scott Brown. It may as well have been 2008...
"Congress is not operating as it should," Bayh said at a news conference in Indianapolis, adding there's too much partisanship and "the people's business is not getting done."
First Dorgan.
Then Ritter.
Then Dodd.
And now Bayh.
I know "We won", and all, but have these jokers ever heard the term Pyrhhic Victory?
That is all.

Probably not. After all, it's not only history, but ancient history. Even worse, it's ancient military history. What could some centuries-dead general have to teach The Smartest People Ever To Live?
This is the best thing to happen in Indiana politics since Paul Helmke, the dumbest man in Indiana politics (and that's saying something), left Fort Wayne took over the helm of the Brady Bunch!
I'm so happy!
Shootin' Buddy
There's too much partisanship? My God, his party had an airtight lock on the Senate and controlled the House! If "the people's business is not getting done", it's hardly the fault of the opposition party.
Feh.
Rats..sinking ship...
OR is there something more going on?
If they are realizing what is happening, that the populace is turning against them, why would they just quit instead of speaking out against it?
They may lose either way but at least lose with honor at trying to save the country??
Is their ideology that strong that these Dems will walk away and not point out the (obvious to most of us) situation that this administration is pushing us into??
If they are realizing what is happening, that the populace is turning against them, why would they just quit instead of speaking out against it?
Despair. They had everything -- huge House majority, filibuster-proof Senate majority, a doormat in the White House who would sign anything they sent him, and a compliant judiciary. They didn't just have all the aces, they had all the aces and all the face cards ... and they still failed on every important issue. America is completely rejecting their agenda. That's a great recipe for a "the-hell-with-it" fit of depression.
WW that makes sense...

and in that case they aren't TRUE americans.
Don't they have to take an oath to uphold the constitution?
History is a book written by a dead white male.
WV: gunscul - where I want to go
Don't they have to take an oath to uphold the constitution?
Yes. So do Representatives and the president of the United States. So what? That oath hasn't mattered to Democrat lawmakers in decades.
One other point: This item on Bayh says that he went from being Indiana Governor to a senator -- from Chief Executive of a reasonably large, important, and wealthy state to just one of 100 senators, each with just as big an ego as his own. I suspect he was never really happy as a senator. Add the disaster brought on by his more liberal brethren, and it's not at all hard to see why he said "take this job and shove it."
I had no idea I was that scary...
This isn't stictly a dem thing.
While Bayh is the third dem senator (after Dorgon and Dodd) to announce retirement, three republican senators that have also announced their retirement (Martinez, Brownback, Bond), with a fourth (Voinovich) apparently on the verge of doing so.
Seems the GOP is holding its own on the sinking ship front...
Scott,
Isn't it beautiful?
