Lord, What's a Cubit?

Holy smokes it is pouring outside. Just got home from church, and there is some serious flash-flooding going on. I've been keeping a watchful eye on the sump pump - if that goes, the entire house may very well float away. Worst part is, it's supposed to rain like this for the rest of the day and a good part of tomorrow, too.

If you don't hear from me, send a canoe... And beer. Lots of beer.

That is all.

And ye shall build an arc of gopher wood. And the arc shall be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits tall and shall have three levels inside . . . . or something like that. See Genensis, chapters 6 through 9.

Got any gopher wood growing near Casa del G ???

18 inches.

Or, more specifically, the length from the point of your elbow to your fingertips.

My minister always said that if it came time to ever build an Ark again, we should find people with very long arms...

Oh, and Evan Almighty's take on "gopher wood" was far too amusing...

In case anyone wants to know, a cubit is roughly the length of a persons forearm. I'm pretty gangly, though--I think an arc built by my cubits would be more work than someone like Kenny Baker.

And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

Just don't bring any fire ants or global warming people.

The question is: How much ammo should one pack in?

Nah, there's use for Global warming people.

Think "Soylent Green"...

Always remember, Jay: It Could Be Worse.

This could be snow, instead of rain.

Or you could be one of those gluttons-for-punishment who live on the coast and are watching twenty-foot breakers eat away at their back yards.

Jay, was that a reference to the old Bill Cosby standup routines about Noah and the Ark? Good stuff!

"Am I on Candid Camera?"

37 days left to finish your Ark, Jay.

Still raining like a cow pissin' on a flat rock here in MA, dammit.

you do have a spare sump pump, right????

"2 is one and one is none...."

Jay G said...

Not only do I have a spare, but it's sitting right next to the sump hole all ready to be dropped into place. It's a submersible sump that we bought the very first year we discovered that the basement flooded. A couple years later we had a company come in and install a dedicated sump, so the submersible is now the backup.

If the primary pump fails, the submersible will be dropped into place immediately until the primary is replaced.

Given that the primary is nearing 10 years old, I think I might go out and buy a new primary just to have...
