Let me preface by saying that, yes, I understand that the plural of anecdote is not data... But...
Tax refund 2008: $2,200
Tax refund 2009: $290
I'm certain it's pure coincidence that 2009 saw the Democrats in control of the House, Senate, and Presidency, right?
That is all.

I'm sure that some smartass is going to come along and ask what your tax return was in 1983......
Jay... what was your tax return in 1938 ;)
Gdoamdn lexdisic boardkey.. should have been 1983..... I quit
Heh.
Doesn't matter either way. I was 12...
Jay,
I have a different take on tax returns -- like that's going to come as a surprise to you. In my opinion, your return of less than $300 was a success. I hold the opinion that if a tax filing results in a payout of less than $250 or a refund of less than $500 you've done your tax planning well. That's the theory . . . not that I've hit those numbers in a long time. That said, I offer my congratulations a tax planning job well done.

The discrepancy has been noted. 2010 will be improved and zere zhall be no refuhnd for you!
Must be some mistake Jay.
I'm sure the .gov (rep & dem alike) didn't mean for you to have that much coming back.
Might pay to double check your numbers
obviously you make more than $250K Per year, right?
Assuming all the variables ( Wages - Deductions – withholding settings etc ) remained the same in the 2 taxable years and that you have a simple basic 2 or 4 page return, my guess is what you are really seeing is the result of Obama’s phony “Tax Cut for the Middle Class” that they did last year. You remember…..he said everyone would see an increase in their weekly pay check due to his “Tax CUT” . Of course what they actually did was reduce people’s withholding so that it looked like you were getting more $$.
Combine that with the equally bogus “Make work pay” $ 800.00 credit and you barely got by with a refund.
But I’m with Brad, a big refund only means that once again you got sucked into to loaning the government your money at 0% interest.
My take is that there is going to be a lot of people who view a refund as some sort forced Christmas Club for April and they going to be pretty pissed at Obama when they don’t get a refund this year.
Ah yes, the thrill of getting something back. Even though it is your own money, much better than when I had to pay and didn't have the dough.
Yep, got a friend who made to the nickel(salary & no raise) what he did last year, with the exact same deductions & got back $2,000.00 less.
That must be that hope & change we keep hearing about.
This post is racist.
Why, because it's black and white?
We crossed the medical deduction threshold (7.5% of AGI) for the 7th consecutive year. Quick, get out your calculator and multiply your gross times 7.5%. I paid AT LEAST that percentage in out of pocket health care. For.Seven.Straight.Years.
And our wonderful Democrats in congress and the messiah in the white house have just passed a bill that raises that floor from 7.5% to 10%. So, I'm getting a tax increase.
My fault, I suppose, for having a kid with autism.

BTW, they withheld less this year (part of the stimulus), which is why some folks got back less via refund. The bastards still raised my taxes, sonsofbitches.
November can't get here soon enough.
RW,
I've been around accountants and tax prep professionals for years . . . and never heard of anyone passing the 7.5% line. Damn. And here's another one . . . if you take part in a Flex Spending Account through your employer . . . you're gonna get whacked there too. The law allowed for a max annual plan of $5000, but under Obama-care, that pre-tax contribution spending account has been capped at $2,500. Fargin bastidges, one and all.
And because I haven't said so in a long time . . . I voted for Scott Brown.

Well, in 2008, you gave the government a $2200 interest-free loan.
Looks like you are improving with time ;).
*sighs and looks at his own tax "bill"*
I hear you. Last year: 3,800. This year, -380.
Mine went down about the same amount... sucks...
Brad,
Let me emphasize that despite my large (and by large I mean humongous, extraordinary, extreme, holy crap) health care expenditures, I was raised to NOT expect my neighbors or fellow countrymen to pay my bills.
You know what that makes me in 2010 America? You guessed it, a racist teabagger.
{Oh, and I have extreme psoriasis, so I undergo UV-B treatments, known to laymen as 'tanning'. Yep, I get that tax whammy, too. Again, my fault for being born with an incurable skin disease while so many Democrats have personal wants that are to be addressed}
RW,
Sorry for your troubles. I'm sure you do a fab job keeping up your chin. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but I had also seen where the "healthcare" bill adds a 10% tax on tanning salons. Sorry
- Brad
