Need a Little Help...

As you may or may not know, the G. family is going back to the Land of the Mouse at the end of this week. We're spending the kids' April vacation at Disney, taking advantage of some really good deals to go back a second time. We figured we'd get the multiple trips in now, while the kids were still young enough to really enjoy the experience. We're also clinically insane, as we're driving down - yes, we're declining the wonders of TSA probulation in favor of 22-24 hours of "He touched me!" "She's lying!" - and that's just what the kids will hear...

Here's where the help comes in. Once again I'll be bringing the Eee along with me to chronicle the magic. I'd like to have at least a couple posts pre-written for each day down there (with Gun Pr0n and Friday Fun threads for both Fridays we'll be gone). I intend to write up the voyage down in great detail so as to dissuade anyone else from attempting the foolish task of driving two small children from MA to FLA record the magic of our southward pilgrimage to Disney.

What are some topics you'd like to see me cover? Could be guns, motorcycles, parenting, here's your chance to ask me anything. Send me an article to comment on. E-mail me some jokes/cartoons to share. Give me an idea for a Friday Top Ten Car list. Ask my opinion on the best caliber (G-d's own pistol, .45 ACP and G-d's own rifle, .308 Win). Any topic is fair game, from the whimsical to the serious. Opinions on guns, cars, bikes, tools, anything - I can use much for blogfodder.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

That is all.

I'd like to hear a bit more about your weight loss. If I recall correctly, you lost a pretty significant amount of weight a couple years back, but that was before I started reading your blog. I have lost 50 pounds in the last year, and still have plenty to go, so it's an area of interest to me. In particular, any loose skin or problems with said looseness?

Parenting is always a welcome topic.

For a Friday Fun thread, how about the cars of celebrities. James Brown (the CBS NFL guy) has a muscle car collection. Reggie Jackson does also. Mr Bean. Roland (Rowan?) Atkisnon owns (owned) a McLaren F1.

No argument here. Have you considered taking a train? Less security, perhaps more comfortable.

How about covering the various gun laws of the States you are passing through? Each in it's turn, the good, the bad, and teh stoopid.

Ooh, now THAT is a great idea, ASM826...

Drove down to Florida from Massachusetts and back once. That was enough. The way down was straight through with 5 drivers. Never, ever will I do that again.

Are you taking the truck?

The best guns in cartoons. You could have Elmer Fudd's shotgun, or Marvin the Martian's ray gun... actually, you should probably change that to just "best guns in Looney Toons"--I can't think of any other that actually had guns.

You Screwed up Jay . Though God may well smile with benevolent approval at the .308, I have it on good authority that when things go to " hell " in heaven he reaches for a 30-BY GOD-06 specifically a well worn and much beloved Garand . just thought you should have that cleared up bud .

Top 10 furrin bikes.
Top 10 NON-HD Amurrican bikes.
Top 10 reasons that bikers who ride without helmets are friggin' idiots.
Top 10 reasons why helmet laws and seatbelt laws suck (OK, I'm not sure you can find 10 reasons, actually. I can only think of two, myself - infringes on my freedom and they serve as a handy excuse for cops to pull you over on fishing expeditions)
Top 10 bike trips, either in New England or across country. (I'm assuming that most of your readers are from the US and don't have the $$ or the urge to take a Beach's bike tour)
Top 10 reasons that Jay G won't get off his lazy butt and come to an Appleseed Shoot so he can hit more than the berm

Got enough materiel there, Jay? ;-)

As an addition to the Celebrity Car Collection, I'd recommend a "best of" from Jay Leno's collection.

Actually, Jay Leno's collection might be worth several Friday Fun threads...

If the Brady's "warning" billboard is still there at the border on the interstate, you simply MUST have a pic of you under it.

I'd like for you to try to keep up with the ratio of "obscenely obese" people versus "normal people", with a special nod to the folks who are so large that they have to rent one of those sit-down-scooters in order to maneuver around Disney.

For some reason, the ratio is larger there than even at Wal-Mart, but I'm wondering if the downturn in the economy has changed it since the last time I visited. Also of note, the trailer park trash who think that designated smoking areas are for nerds who follow rules & thus walk around the various parks w/Marlboro in hand (renegades!).

or not. :)

How about a post on what is the best sub-compact auto pistol?

Wave when you pass through VA.

or, if your kids are interested in vehicles.... you can have them keep a tally of the interesting vehicles that they see on the way down... then do a Top 10 of their choice of cars for 1 week, and their choice of bikes for the next.....

I think a primer on the gun laws of the states you pass through would actually be an interesting thing to see as well....

Top ten vehicles to take a road trip in?

Places to visit (or not visit) while on the road to the mouse's house.

Still, I like ASM826's idea.

As an aside, although it's well off the 95 corridor, if you need an overnight rest stop in NY, I think you have my number.

Don't go through NYC, and I don't think you want to stop in NYS either. IIRC it's effectively impossible to possess a handgun legally in NYS as a non-resident - and they arrest first and let the judge sort out FOPA. NJ isn't *quite* so bad, you can at least fuel up as long as it's a "reasonable" diversion. OTOH, you don't HAVE to go through NJ and can save a couple of bucks by avoiding it. Costs you an extra hour, probably, and more time in NYS.

Thanks for the ideas, folks - some really good ones here! To answer a few random questions,

Yes.

No.

Re: taking a train. Takes about the same amount of time as driving, and we'd still have to rent a car when we got there. The whole idea behind driving is that we have more independence that way.

When we flew last year, we left the house at 6 AM to get to the airport in time (2 hours ahead, remember?).

We didn't get to our hotel until just before 5, when all was said and done. Ditto on the return trip = we were waiting at the hotel at 11 AM for the bus, and didn't get home until 10 PM.

Yes, driving is easily double that amount of time, we understand that. But we can leave when we want; we can drive to/from the parks; we can make side trips; we can go to the grocery store to get stuff for breakfast...

No, we're not taking the Dodge, we're taking the wife's vehicle. She got a 2010 Pilot in January with all the bells and whistles - leather interior, DVD player for the kids, etc.

.30-06 is a relic round from a past century that gets chambered in guns that have long outlived their usefulness (hmm, that might be a post on its own).

If the billboard is still at the state line, there WILL be a picture or pictures of me mocking it mercilessly.

We'll wave on our way through NY and VA - look for the shaved head biker dude driving with his head out the sunroof to get away from the kids' fighting...

Thanks for the kind offer, Zercool, but we're leaving late Thursday night with the intention of getting through DC before rush hour.

And there will be no firearms brought on the trip, so the admonition about NYC is appreciated but not needed. Basically, like last year, I'll be staying on Disney property and visiting 95% Disney attractions - all places where CCW is prohibited, even if I had my FL non-res...

When Mrs Dwarven1 and I drive to SC to visit her sister, we leave at about 11:00 PM and stop for breakfast at the Cracker Barrel just between Richmond and Petersburg. Good place to eat. Here's the GPS co-ords for it: N37 21.354 W77 24.429

Tell the Mouse we'll see him in a few weeks.

I'll wave as you pass through Jersey. BTW - it is entirely possible to get through Jersey without touching the Turnpike; an dif you're careful you can even manage it entirely without tolls.
