One Week...

...is all it took for the iTouch to go from a neat little gadget to a source of intense irritation. It has lost the Wi-fi signal in the house and is unable to get it back no matter what I try. I've visited plenty of forums trying to find the answer - apparently this is a common occurrence with Apple products - to no avail. It's extremely frustrating, as the biggest selling point was instant connectivity anywhere, and now I can't even get online in my own home.

It's obviously not the wireless network in my house, as both the laptop and the Eee connect just fine. There are literally pages upon pages of "fixes" and tricks to "help" the iTouch reconnect to the internet, but the most obvious fixes aren't helping. I'm left with either restoring the system and losing all my settings or bringing it back to the store (both are very popular "fixes").

Is this really how Apple handles things? It works for a week and then breaks? I mean, Windows applications also have pages upon pages of errors, but at least those fixes work. I'm stymied by this thing - and if I keep trying to fix it with no luck it's eventually going to get broken (OOG SMASH). If this is how their computing devices work you can count me a Windows fan from here on in. There is simply no excuse for this being an issue - not when I have two other devices that have been connecting without fail for years.

Color me very unhappy with the iTouch.

That is all.

UPDATE: I am a f**king moron. Let's just leave it that I was inputting the wrong security code. When I put in the correct code, it started working again. I don't know if it was restoring the iTouch or resetting the router that did it, but it's back working again...

I'm still not happy that it lost my internet connection after week, but it should have been an easy fix. I don't know if it was the router being reset or the iTouch being restored that did it, but now I know that one of the two should work. Next time, though, I start with the router...

Apple, the H&K of the computer world! But don't fret, their operating system is based on Unix so it is extremely stable.

Assuming that you’ve synced your itouch with itunes on either your laptop or Eee previously then after you wipe the itouch and resync all your old settings should still be there.
I’ve never seen that issue with my iphone, but then if it can’t find a wifi it simply uses the phone to connect. It does seem that there is always a line of people at the “genius bar” exchanging their ipods / itouches for one reason or anther.

That's weird. I've never had that problem with mine. Huh.

Restored and brought back. Still no connection. Official proclamation: Piece of shit.

That is all.

If God had meant us to have computers He would have instructed John Moses Browning to build one.

I like Reputo's comment, too:

Heh.

I'm not gonna say anything.

Just post this comment from my Droid over WiFi at Starbucks (while carrying, of course).

SHHHH!!!!

Your going to get the apple zombies angry.

If they hear of your decent there will be 1000's of tragically hip 20-somethings like ..... like...just chilling and asking for the government to make a law and stuff against stuff like what you did there dude.

Dude....

Its under WARRANTY! You take the thing to an Apple Store, and I'm quite sure that if they can't figure out what happened that they'll simply swap it out for another.

One thing about Apple....they are VERY brand-conscious. They don't want unhappy customers, as unhappy=reduced revenue stream.

Now...I'm not a Mac Fanbois, but I will give t hem props...when the things work, they are phenomenal. When they fail, they are frustrating, because they are locked down so damned tight. Kinda like owning a Ducatti...its a great ride for 20 minutes, then it needs 20 hours of maintenance work.

Pfft. You're lying, Jay. Didn't any one tell you? Macs just work! Now stop lying and go enjoy the marvelous flawlessness that is the mac experience!

I admit it. I'm a Mac user. Have been for twenty-five years. Yes, honestly. (Macintosh was intro'd in 1984, dad brought one home from work in 1985. I've had one ever since.)

I'm also a Windows user.

When Macs work - which is, in my experience, most of the time - they work very well. When things start going sideways on a Mac, it's about the frustrating thing I've ever had to work with. Windoze, I can, at least to some extent, poke around under the hood. MacOS? I'm not a *nix geek and noodling around with a command-line that I don't understand doesn't please me.

All that said ... the advice of "take it to an Apple store and say, 'FIX IT!'" is the best thing on here. :)

WV: exensesc - what one does a few weeks after a nasty breakup and a long night at the bar.

Update: It's been to the Apple store. They were able to tell me that it connects to their secure network, and nothing else.

They did offer to waive the 10% restocking fee if I wanted to trade it in on another one, which is what I think I will do.

I've reset the router, it didn't work. I've restored the iTouch, it didn't work - theoretically, that should return the unit to the same condition in which I received it the day I brought it home - but it didn't.

Quite simply, if I futz around with this any more it's going to wind up a very expensive skeet.

I worked for ATT when the first iPhone came out (shudder). The antennas in many of them weren't attached well and would come loose, making the iPhone unable to get a signal. This could be a hardware issue, so you should open it up and... oh, it's an Apple, to open it up would void the warranty and make the Virgin Mary cry. I'd try the reset and then go exchange it.

I've seen an app that acts as a sniper computer (not sure of the lingo). Saw a pic of an ipod attached to a rail of an AR15 using the app. Something to look out for. :)

Our house Macs and our router sometimes have a hissy, so we reset the router and after five minutes or so everyone is playing well again. We also have a marginal Internet provider, so that could be a factor in the situation at Festung Kleinrot.

Every so often mine wont connect (even with the right code) Usually if I power it off and back on it connects right up

Just wait till you hit the data loss, and DRM issues of synching with iTunes.
