Friday Gun Pr0n #165

Here's a little something sent to me in e-mail. JRebel over at Just Another Missouri Rebel was kind enough to send this drool-worthy shot:

Remington 700

That's a Rem 700 in God's Own Old Testament Caliber, a.k.a. .30-6, wearing a mil-dot 4X-16X scope. If it looks familiar it's because JReb set it up as his header shot (gee, I like that idea, wonder if I should do something like that?) *g* With the .30-06 chambering, adjustable bipod, and scope it's good for pretty much any North American game - or blue helmet - one happens across. Here's one practical tactical!

Thanks for sending the pic in, JReb!

That is all.

Now you are saying that .30-06 is God's own, the other day you said .308. Well? Which is it?

.30-06 is God's Own Caliber, Old Testament.

.308 Winchester is God's Own Caliber, New Testament.

(Thanks to aepilotjim for that one).

That's a good distinction, Jay.

Most Certainly for Bolt guns .30-06 will do just about anything that needs getting done.

But for semi-autos the shorter race-way and overall size dictates that .308 is vastly superior! : ]

Ok, that I can attend bible study for.

I have an opportunity to pick up a Savage 111 Hunter series in 30-06. Synthetic stock, stainless hardware, 3x9 variable. New. I was with dude that owns it when he picked it up and we sighted it in. Asking 400 bucks.
Sigh...how to explain that one to "She who holds the purse strings!"?
Suggestions are welcome.

"But honey, I've always had that rifle. I just put a new stock and a scope on it..."

No? Try begging. It generally doesn't work for me, but YMMV... ;)

I've got a 700 in .308 with the mil-spec 5R barrel and a 10x mil-dot scope, and I love it. Absolute tack driver. The only downside is that with a scope it's a a pain to load - if it came standard with a detachable magazine it'd be perfect.

I've got pretty much that exact rifle, only without a bipod and a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40mmSF BDC on it instead of a mil-dot.

Kicks like a mule. It should ideally weigh between two or three pounds more than it does. Other than that, great rifle.

Thanks Jay, I couldn't say it better myself.

Love my Savage FE10 with the trigger screwed down to 2lbs.
175 Sierras on top of 42 of Varget may put a dent in a blue helmet, at 800 yards.

"Kick like a mule", whoa, you try out a Win 300 Mag. The advantage of the '06 is it has about 1/3 kick than those monster mountain rifles. You might give up 35yds or so but at least your shoulder won't be black and blue after you sight it in. Besides that, does any other cartridge have as many bullet weight choices ? From varmints to the mystical wapiti this is one versatile cartridge.
