New York City officials say a renewed search this year of debris in and around the World Trade Center site has recovered 72 human remains.I'm glad that 72 more families will finally have closure. It's pretty eerie, realizing that they're still finding victims almost nine years later. How many countless dozens - or hundreds - will never been found? How many will never be identified? What does it say about the magnitude of the attack that it's taken this long to find these victims?
The sifting of more than 800 cubic yards (612 cubic meters) of debris recovered from ground zero and underneath roads around the lower Manhattan site began in April and ended Friday.
And it's especially telling that they're using terms like "remains" and "ground zero" (as opposed to "Ground Zero") in these reports - the vast majority have forgotten the horror of that day.
That is all.

I would suggest that it may not be another 72 families...
We lost a dear friend on that day. Her family had to make a decision about her remains - 1) take what was first identified and not take anymore, 2) take what was first identified and then take whatever else may be identified as it is found, 3) leave it all with the NY ME office until there are no more remains found or 4) take nothing at all.
This new finding could mean that countless families will get yet another knock on the door, telling them that more of their beloveds have been identified.
Sorry but I don't count that as closure for them; it's a constant, aching open wound. Our friends opted to take what was first identified, period. The idea of getting that phone call or visit countless times was just too much for them to contemplate. I don't blame them.
Never forgive. Never forget.
Sorry for the duplicate comment; Blogger was giving some funky error messages that made it seem like the comment didn't go thru.
Maybe they can have a memorial service for them at the Ground Zero Mosque ...

This is something most people either don't know, don't think about, or forget about. The horror and pain from that day will live on for some peoples entire lives. They will carry those wounds forever, and they will never fully heal.
"Never forgive. Never forget."
Amen.
You know what really does it? Kids that are 9 years old have never lived in a pre-9/11 world. It's almost been a decade since the attack, and as my generation has those children and ages, we move ourselves away from the mental scars that it brought on. This is to our detriment, sadly.
Jake - thank you for that kind comment. Because it is so true. Believe me the "inside view" of the events and aftermath of 9/11 is not the same as what most people see or hear or remember.
Never forgive. Keep the fury like a burning pillar of fire in your heart.
This war will not end in our lifetime unless one side or the other is destroyed. If we will not fight, finally, for what we believe, we will be vanquished by those who will.
It was about September 13th, 2001, that I was ready to be done mourning and go over and end this threat. I'm still ready, if the rest of America ever catches on.
That day will be forever burned in my memory.
Sadly I also agree with Caleb.
I still want someone turned into a smoking crater of radioactive glass for 9/11/01.
I'll stop hating them when they're all dead and burning in hell.
