Almost Done...

Ugh. Spent the morning cleaning pistols and .22LR rifles. Made it as far as the Mosin Nagant (how the hell does a rifle get THAT dirty after only 20 rounds?) and one shotgun before I ran out of steam. Still have the Bushmaster and one more shotgun to clean, but I am done for the day. Especially since when I was reassembling the PPK, I managed to catch the base of my thumb in the action and tear a nice little chunk out that all kinds of solvents could get in and sting.

I don't want to say I'm anal-retentive about cleaning, but I cleaned my Smith & Wesson model 17 after firing exactly 5 rounds through it. Now, granted, I just ran a boresnake down the barrel and cleaned the cylinders with a Q-tip, but still. FIVE ROUNDS! I think I need help... It just had to be done, though - Zercool brought some truly gorgeous target grips for a K-frame S&W that wound up in my grubby little mitts, and they just wouldn't go with a dirty gun, would they?

My name is Jay G., and I'm a Hoppes-aholic...

That is all.

Wow, I'm so much lazier than you. My guns pretty much only get cleaned when they get too dirty to run or I have them out in the rain. (corrosive ammo excepted of course)

To paraphrase . . .

I love the smell of Hoppes #9 in the morning . . . it smells like FREEDOM.

Hoppes, Bah!

Use Kroil (http://www.amazon.com/Kano-Kroil-Penetrating-liquid-KROIL/dp/B000F09CF4). Cleans the guns, your sinuses, and your frontal lobe all at the same time.

Well, I doubt you were shoving match grade 7.52x54 into it. :)

Don't let the Hoppes fumes get to your head Jay.

*I prefer CLP personally.

Scrubbed 10 last night, the only one still waiting is the 9mm. May have to dirty it up a bit more first !

I just put the FA Suppressed 22 into the Ultrasonic tank. The MP5SD will be next. None of the others will be cleaned.

We really hammered that 22. I counted at least 30 mags through it and that was just me paying attention. I bet there were at least another 10 more.

I am already thinking about next time.

Yep, I have tonight booked to clean everything. . . only did the Black Powder yesterday as it is corrosive. . . seems I spend as much time cleaning them as shooting them. . .

I lack the cleaning OCD too. I only clean when function is impaired and then it's a quick hose down with brake cleaner and a relube.

Uhg. I am trying to motivate right now to get some cleaning done, but I have to go out this evening, so it won't be much. Half@ssed cleaned the Mosin before I left there, since I was shooting corrosive ammo and I knew it would be this afternoon at the earliest I could look at it. Probably tackle that now, and save the rest for tomorrow. I REALLY want to look at all the pics and video I took, but I guess that will have to wait.

I clean my rifle every week after I come home from the range, where I shoot about 60 rounds.

It takes about an hour, and never seems to get fully clean. I wonder if I'm doing it wrong.

Ummmm ..... er..... mehbee that ammo you bought was made by the lowest bidder? Possibly in some gulag somewheres .....

@John- Easy bore cleaning: Try a wet patch of Hoppes and park it muzzle down (not on something improtant, like say .... white carpet) for 24 hours. Then another wet patch, scrub with a nylon bore brush, wet patch and enough dry patches until they come out clean. Another wet patch and park it again. By day 3, it should be easily cleaned with a 1/2 dozen patches.

Thanks, jimbob86, I'll try that.

I don't get too obsessed with keeping my firearms clean. I'm primarily concerned about the chamber, gas system [should it apply] and bolt face.

On the other hand, I'm a little more receptive to keeping any long distance rifle or side arm clean.

I am kind of half n' half in my clean-gun-OCD. My sidearm gets a weekly cleaning and re-lube regardless of whether or not it has been fired. My truck gun gets inspected every day or two and rubbed down with oil every week or sooner as-needed. My bedside guns get inspected and oiled weekly.

Any defensive arm is cleaned obsessively the moment I get back from the range. My little Henry 22 gets a brush run down the barrel after every few range trips and the receiver scrubbed out every time it gets sickeningly goey. Shotguns get cleaned and lubed when the receiver looks dry, otherwise they just get put away. Rifles not in the defensive battery get wiped down after use and put away, the bores get cleaned when I feel like it.

Cleaned the Mosin when I got home (corrosive ammo), got most of the pistols all scrubbed after we got back from the hospital, and then I totally ran out of steam.

Maybe more cleaning tonight.

The Shotgun and the AK I suspect will need a good scrubbing.
