Pretty Neat...

Okay, so it's already been seen elsewhere on the web, and the concept could use some tweaking, but I've been sent this by just about everyone, and it really is pretty slick:

Chrysler's Gun-Toting Pickup Truck
Chrysler's Ram truck division is taking direct aim at hunters with a unique feature on its new line of Outdoorsman pickup trucks - a gun closet.

Called the The Mopar RamBox Holster, its a rack that can hold two rifles or shotguns inside one of the lockable, watertight compartments located on either side of the pickup bed.
Folks have already called out that the guns should face the other way (although it's hard to tell from the picture, I'd wager that the guns can be loaded in either direction) and that there would be significant damage to the rifles in the event of an accident. Those are fair points; others have also pointed out that Chrysler's fit-and-finish might lead to leaking that could damage the guns. Still others point out that Chrysler took .gov bailout money and therefore are to be avoided.

All that aside, I'm still pretty torn on this. On the one hand, it's nice to see a hand extended to the gun owning community - for once, someone took the time to design something for gun owners, execution aside. I'm certain that this was the result of many countless hours of some marketing drone pouring over survey response cards and noting a high correlation between pickup owners and gun ownership - particularly hunters.

That's the flip side. This is clearly a shout-out to the Fudds, with space for only two rifles - and nothing for pistols. Now, I'm certain that the market is very slim for an IDPA-based truck, but it would have been nice to have seen some provisions for arms other than hunting rifles. Another neat touch would have been partnering with MidwayUSA, Brownells, or any of the other gun-and-hunting related suppliers to throw in some padding, pockets, and other gun-related accouterments that showed more than a cursory familiarity with firearms...

Then again, this is only a first step, and so far it looks to be a good one.

That is all.

It looks like the compartments are pretty modular. A pistol box would be a cool aftermarket add on.

Do not think thieves would not notice this.

That being said, it is a nice touch if your around your truck when the guns are on board.

They used one of these trucks on the TV show Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and it showed a couple of them loading some rifles and a pistol case into one of those side compartments. Pretty nifty idea, I lusted after one of those trucks for a little while, but it's a bloody expensive addition.

Hmmm. Every one of those trucks will get pulled over in MA or NJ for going a mere mile over the speed limit. It holds guns, might as well paint a big target on it.

They added the inside the bedrail boxes a few years ago. Pretty slick idea for otherwise mostly wasted space.
The gun rack part inside is the only new idea, there are thousands of Rams that look just like this already running around with tools, golf clubs, or food (it also works as a drainable cooler). Not as big a target for police then the hemi badge and dual exhaust.

Do they throw in a /hoppes #9 air frshener.

I think a ford Brownell's edition would be great. Something IDPA

Is it only on one side, or did they make it Port and Starboard? If it's driver side only, and you have to pull to the curb in front of your gun gun shop for repair work, and you have your back to traffic while standing in the street, and you pull out a rifle and you swing it up to the sky so you don't muzzle anyone while a Brady-type is walking down the sidewalk or swerving to not hit your butt as they pass you in their Eco-Friendly Prius....."Film at 11!"

I'm in the avoid because they took bailout money camp.

After they took the bail out money I sent Chrysler a letter with a picture of my great-grandfather in his dodge truck. Another with my grandfather in his dodge truck. A third of my Dad in his Dodge car. And one of me with the Dodge van, car and truck in the driveway. Then I added a picture of my Daughter standing next to her brand new Toyota. I told them congratulations you lost a 5 generation family customer. We are in the market for a new van - it will not be a Dodge.

It's not designed for long-term storage. Or for taking a gun to the shop. It *is* designed for two or three guys to stick a couple guns in on the way to the duck blinds or deer stands, and to hold them more securely - and legally - than tossed on the back seat. I like it. A lot. Too bad I don't need a new truck...

I can see the utility of this box. I recently bought a Toyota Corolla and found that my rifle case won't fit inside, now matter how it's arranged.

Much better than two rifles would be a 1919 Browning, with 2,000 linked rounds. Organize 'em along the lines of the ammo bays in the wings of some WWII warbird.

Why? Just because it'd be about the most anti-fuddite thing one could do with that rig.

Well if I'm a Fudd, for hunting for my dinner, what inflammatory term do I use on the non-hunting gunnies? Okay, lil' websurfing straightened my understanding out. The actual Fudd mindset, I find more difficult to stomach, than a flaming liberal in my midst. Don't those self-immolaters get right up your nose?

As for the thieves, could we maybe make that into a comfy compartment for a couple of pit bulls?

John B.,

I have NO argument with hunters that support my right to own an AR-15 or a Glock.

It's the ones that support the AWB because "no one needs an AK47 to hunt deer" or oppose concealed carry because "handguns are only made for killing" that draw my ire...

Of course, one can say that Aston Martin and "Q" beat Dodge with the Proper way to carry firearms in a vehicle a few decades ago. "Goldfinger, he's a man, a man with the Midas Touch..."

But, it's Fred Thompson for the win. From his Facebook page:

Chrysler is rolling out a new line of trucks featuring a built-in gun rack.

Big deal. My pickup trucks have always had a special compartment big enough to carry all my guns. It's called "the bed".
