Freedom of Speech...

...Especially the speech we disagree with. Even if said speech revolts us to the core. Even if said speech makes us want to grab a trusty rifle to start culling the herd. It's still not the government's domain to infringe upon.

Crime FL Cops: Manual on How to Molest Children Is Legal
Apparently this fits in a category similar to books on how to make bombs. You can write one, read one, put it on your shelf. Until you decide to blow up your neighbor’s tool shed, you haven’t done anything illegal.

That is the conundrum for police in Orange County, Florida where a 170-page manual has been circulating for months. The manual could not be more revolting or reprehensible. It’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to molest children. Detective Philip Graves told WFTV-TV, ““I’ve never seen anything like it. It was pretty amazing when I first saw it just because how detailed it was.”

While the very thought makes me reach for my Mossberg (with bayonet attached, although for this I'd really like the chainsaw), I do not think the government should make such speech illegal. As much as I'd love to see such manuals expunged from the face of the Earth (ideally launched, with every owner, into deep space with nothing more than tidy whities), giving the government the power to ban speech we find morally repugnant starts us down a very slippery slope.

I did love this comment, though:

Then the book I want to write “how to beat a child molester with a bat and hide the body” should be ok as well

Heh. A poster after my own black heart...

And the next poster after the above has an excellent point as well:

Yeah, it should. My only hope is that it will give law enforcement officials and parents new insight into the way these pervs opperate. Maybe it will help them spot potential molestors and inform their kids. Probably not going to be helpful, but it is a hope. This book makes me want to puke.

While it does thoroughly disgust me, this book may very well be the Rosetta Stone to the child molester's secret club. Knowing how they hide their intentions and conceal their steps is a golden opportunity to catch more of them. Finding out how they convince their victims to remain quiet means we can find new ways to get the victims to come forth.

And G0d Himself may have mercy on them, but I'll make sure there's not enough organic material left over for DNA samples...

That is all.

"You either defend the right of people to say things that offend you or you don't really believe in freedom of speech"

Unfortunately, there will always be people willing to test my absolute commitment to that concept. Still, at least the upcoming followup book: "Burying the bodies for kids - a how to guide to everything from quicklime to incineration" (with bonus chapters on rapist identification, and why shot placement matters) will do well.

From Ross, who is having trouble posting:

I view such books as a valuable resource. Before your BP spikes, let me explain HOW.

As you know, I work in the telephony world. Some years back I chanced across a reprehensible little article in Phrack (or was it 2600?) called someone-or-other's "Guide to Hacking Meridian Mail". This got my ears pricked up, as I was in charge of a good-sized MerMail system at the time, connected to a LOT of toll-free numbers with lines that could connect across the world (we were a travel agency; we COULDN'T restrict calling!).

Well, I read this little publication from start to finish... and then made a checklist of all the things he mentioned and went through the phone & voice mail systems and locked down every last thing he mentioned. And THEN I wrote up a detailed memo on what not to do so that our people wouldn't become victims of the social networking hacks (like "Can you transfer me to extension 9000?", for example).

So that little book should be studied by every parent out there to learn how to protect their children from the morally bankrupt perverted pond scum who would prey on them. And if some of those would-be predators wind up either room temperature or with several broken bones... well, that's good, too.

Simple solution. Post the name and picture of everybody who buys one of those books.

I agree that this should be read and studied so you can find those that wish to harm your children... but I don't know that I have the stomach for reading something like this.

Agree with ALL the posters, of course if any of us DID write the book on 'disposal', we'd be accused of murder or some such crap... sigh...

There is, however, precedent for suing the author and publisher if one's child (or oneself) is molested by someone who used the book.

As example, I offer the book "Hitman".

Making bombs, or even machineguns, are perfectly legal activities. . . provided you jump through ALL the hoops (and that FFL/SOT status is a wee bit pricey once you figure in the mandatory ITAR registration). It may be impractical or "merely" extremely expensive, but you CAN legally experiment with making bombs or machineguns, with the proper paperwork in hand.

However, there is no legal way to be a hitman or a child molestor -- which is why the 4th Circuit Federal Appeals Court ruled that a lawsuit could proceed against the publisher of "Hitman". From the ruling, the book is unprotected because "Hit Man is, pure and simple, a step-by-step murder manual, a training book for assassins" -- therefor it is useful only for aiding and abetting a criminal act.

(I happen to disagree, as I could isee it being useful for constructing LEO training scenarios, or as reference material for novelists and screenwriters, thus giving it a legal use. But SCOTUS declined to hear the case, so the 4th Circuit ruling is the last ruling of the highest court that has addressed it, and while not necessarily binding outside 4th Circuit, is certainly precedent.)

I understand your feelings... but don't you think that soldiers and cops must study things that turn their stomachs?

Think of it this way: It's for the children.

as a florida marine patrol officer told me once while I was refueling his plane after he spent several hours looking for a body floating in the gulf of mexico "if you ever need to get rid of a body, don't dump em in the gulf. Sharks won't touch em. Gators on the other hand will eat anything."

being this story is in orlando, gators should be easy to find.

I think I'd have a much better shot at making it to Chapter 3 with this book than the Perv Manual.

I believe that this information is nothing new; I am sure that there is a vast psychological and/or criminological literature on the topics.
