Qapla!

The World's Most Dangerous Librarian brought this little bit of awesome to my attention:

BaQa'—or Is It Humbug? Aliens Attack a Holiday Classic

CHICAGO—Across the country this week, productions of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" are warming hearts. In this city, one version poses this question: What if Charles Dickens were a Trekkie?

The answer runs an hour and 20 minutes and includes three fight scenes, 17 actors with latex ridges glued to their foreheads and a performance delivered entirely in Klingon—a language made up for a Star Trek movie.

Just because I own a bat'leth and have a Klingon Christmas ornament, I get all the Star Trek stuff... Of course, it doesn't help that the very first thing I did when seeing this link was think "ZOMG! I need to see this!"... Oh, and my favorite Christmas tune is "Christmas Eve in Sarajevo" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which good friend and commenter SCI-FI opined was "Christmas music... if it were composed by Klingons".

"My name is JayG, and I'm a nerd"

That is all.

"Carol of the Bells" - which is contained in "Christmas in Sarajevo" - has been haunting me for a week. I like the Trans-Siberian version best of the 20 (!!) or so I've heard in the last week. I'm real close to "OMG MAKE IT STOP" territory.

BTW, thanks so much for "Gear Jammer" ... though it's kind of frustrating to listen to in traffic, like I did last Friday!!

I saw T-SO live with a few friends when they played in Manchester. While standing in line, I noticed a bunch of people my father's age, wearing plain leather jackets, and so-on.

In the middle of the crowd, I screamed, "Who here loves Blood, Sweat, and Tears?!"

The crowd cheered. My friends shook their heads at my out-dated dorkiness.

During the concert, they played Christmas Nights In Blue, one of my favortie songs. The others in my group love it also, so we were beyond exited. The band turned it into a medley and didn't play the whole tune. No, I'm not bitter...

Moral of this story? Being a nerd is awesome sometimes, and T-SO makes for a fun concert.

FWIW, my family calls TSO's "Christmas Eve Sarajevo" the "Die Hard Christmas Carol."

Having had the privilege of seeing TSO live, I can find no better description of their performances.

Gotta wonder how many people can actually keep up with the Klingon script... Kind of like the hardcore Roman Catholics still doing the Latin thing.

I saw T-SO in Charlotte and it was fantastic. I don't speak Klingon but the opera sounds like it would be fun to see.

Just because I don't personally plan to go see it doesn't mean I don't think it's INSANELY COOL to live in a world, and a time, and near a city where people would not only think of doing something like this, but follow through on it while sober. :)

(And this despite the fact that "people who speak Klingon, while not actually engaged in professional acting in an authorized Star Trek franchise production" are among the biggest reasons that real SF doesn't get the mainstream respect it deserves.)
