Reader Mike Y. sends us this tale out of Delaware:
'Fed up' 82-year-old held alleged thieves at gunpoint
Joe Harper, an 82-year-old retired high school math teacher and business owner with diabetes and leukemia, says he isn't a hero.
"But people keep telling me I am," he said. "They keep shaking my hand, telling me I'm a hero, honking and waving."
Seems as though Mr. Harper didn't take kindly to criminals stealing his things, catching them in the act with his goods in the bed of their truck. As they tried to get away, he shot out one of the truck's tires and then told the goblins in the truck that if the truck moved, the driver would "get one right between the eyes"... Good on you Mr. Harper!
Commenter teke175 sends this story out of Houston, TX:
Man fights back against suspected home invaders
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A homeowner turned the tables on a group of armed robbers, shooting them when they tried to break into his home.
It happened around 7:30pm at a home on Glenfield Hollow Lane, which is near the Black Horse Golf Course in northwest Harris County. It's an upscale area with several subdivisions. The homes here are surrounded by the two courses that are part of the Black Horse Golf Club.
Got that? This home invasion happened in a "good" neighborhood - this is one of those "it can't/won't happen here" stories. Except that it did. Of course, since it was Texas, the homeowner was armed, the bad guys got shot, and the good guy walks away unscathed. Had this happened in an "enlightened" state like MA or CA where the homeowners are unlikely to be armed, this would have been a different story entirely...
Friend of mine on FB sent me this story out of GA:
Savannah-Chatham police charge former Beach basketball star in Sunday robbery attempt
A former Beach High School girls basketball star was charged Monday by Savannah-Chatham police with aggravated assault and intent to rob. Monique Willis — who as a senior in 2009 led Beach to the Class AAAAA semifinals — was charged after she was identified as a suspect in a Sunday night robbery attempt at the Windsor Arms apartment complex, near the intersection of Largo Drive and Woodley Road, said Gena Moore, metro police spokeswoman.
She pulled a gun on the intended victim, they scuffled, she ran off. He ran after her, she shot at him, he shot back and hit her. She was dropped off at the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound and was apprehended accordingly. Once again, armed resistance from the intended victim changed this story from a negative to a positive.
One more thing to take note of in all of these stories - they're not happening at 2AM in the bad part of town. The first story happened at 8 o'clock in the morning; the other two before 9PM. While it's certainly a truism that "nothing good happens after 2AM", bad things can happen at any time of the day - don't let your guard down simply because it's morning, or early evening, or...
I found it interesting that we appear to be seeing an increase in the number of these types of stories being reported. While the Dead Goblin Count tracks criminals who have gone to meet their Maker at the hands of law abiding citizens with guns, there are exponentially greater stories like the above, where the criminal is simply deterred or wounded - and countless thousands more than that where the non-crime goes unreported. A potential victim simply reaching for their concealed pistol might send a prospective mugger running the other way, with no one calling the cops. These things happen a lot more than the media or the Bradys would like us to realize, and it's important to give voice to them whenever possible.
And lastly, like a wise man I know once said, "Carry your guns, people".
That is all.

I thought that "carry your guns..." quote came from a wise petite librarian?
Her quote was "Carry your gun - it's a lighter burden than regret."
I was quoting PDB, who may very well have been paraphrasing, or misquoting, the World's Most Dangerous Librarian...
