The Big Guy sends in this heartwarming tale out of the Granite State:

Warner homeowner injured, intruder shot dead

An intruder who apparently broke into the home of an 82-year-old Warner man and assaulted the elderly homeowner early Sunday later was found dead from a gunshot to the head.

Gordon L. Smith, a well-known Warner native, was taken to a local hospital where he is being treated for minor injuries suffered during the incident that occurred about 3 a.m. in his 148 West Main St. home.

The goblin shot was in his 20s. Local reports indicate that the phone line to Mr. Smith's house had been cut prior to the invasion - so unless Mr. Smith had a cell phone handy, calling 911 and cowering wasn't an option. He wasn't about to go toe-to-toe with a man 1/4 of his age; fortunately for him, he had the tools necessary to provide for his own protection. One of the comments to the article mentions the Mount Vernon attack - that it could have been a wake-up call to people that yes, evil really does walk among us sometimes.

If in fact Mr. Smith bought a gun for protection in the wake of that tragedy, then Kimberly Cates did not die in vain.

Dead Goblin Count: 118.

That is all.

This might not qualify for the DGC, though. The article you linked doesn't say the homeowner shot him. In fact, it avoided saying that. It might have been a third party and he might be dead because of an accomplice or another person entirely.

It looks like they're going out of their way to say anything beyond "there was an incident, the victim received minor injuries, and the perpetrator is dead." They're not even saying if the homeowner called 911 or someone else did.

Then there's this little gem:
"An autopsy will reveal whether the death was the result of a homicide, suicide, accident or natural causes."

The gunshot wound to the head is generally suggestive that he did not die from "natural causes".

Like Jake, I've got some problems with the article. I understand that the author of the article is trying not to overcommit or reveal more than he knows, or possibly to reveal information like "Smith illegally owned a gun", but sentences like this --

Authorities do not believe Smith knew the victim.

-- refer to the "Dead Goblin" as a "victim" or "the shooting victim's body." If he was a goblin, he ain't a victim.

Ditto from what others said. The AG's office hasn't identified the goblin. The ministry of truth (WMUR) wouldn't even identify the corpse as a burglar until his son said it today. And it's Mont Vernon not Mount Vernon ;)

The old man wasn't known to own firearms, although I wouldn't be surprised if he did knowing the area. This might be a case where your likely to have your gun used against you in a crime as our young example found out.

You'll need to revise your DGC. The AG released today that the young man broke in to the home bringing his own firearm, bound & beat the elderly homeowner, and then shot himself in the head.

DG still dead, but I don't think suicide counts by your DGC rules.
