Thought Question...

Which is the uglier abomination to its heritage:

Porsche Panamera

or

Jaguar X-type

Discuss.

That is all.

The Jag is worse...how can you have a Jaguar station wagon?

Well, duh, it's obviously the x-type. At least the Porsche is still a "car", if "car" is rather loosely defined.

I mean, c'mon. Jag is not Volvo. They shouldn't be doing station wagons.

Unless I just inadvertently hit on the answer. Ford, Jag, Volvo, mix, shake, stir.

*blech*

Sorry Merlin, but the Panamera really isn't a car. It's a hatchback, and it is ugly as sin.

If it was my kid I'd have drowned it at birth.

Well. They're both pretty ugly, but a four-door Porsche? Why G@d, why?

Jay G said...

Not only that, but a four door Porsche that takes 6 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

That's what the Ford Mustang with the 5.0L V8 did - in the 1980s...

My first thought was "Well give me both and I will decide between them." Then I got a good look at the two cars... I wouldn't take either one if they were free. Though I were forced, I would take the hatchback Porsche over the station wagon Jag.

Don't be so quick to dump on the Panamera until you've actually driven one.

It's not quite as bad in person, and, of course, when you're driving it you don't have to look at the exterior. Once you're underway, it's an entirely differnt thing.

Just don't think of it as a 4 door 911.....it was not intended to be that. Think Porsche Executive Transport. Roomy, comfortable back seats. High speed long distance travel. LA to Vegas - NYC to Washington - Paris to Monaco - Munich to Rome etc.

It that market....It going to dominate.

.....Now ... a Jag station wagon thats just wrong on soooo many levels.

Why wouldn't you go for a BMW M series or Mercedes AMG?

Seems to me Porsche has sold their soul for an expanded product line.

Like Saturn, and we know where *that* got them...

At least the Porsche makes up for its uggggly by performing in an outstanding manner for a 4 door sedan.
The Jaguar, sad to say has little to recommend it save a name tarnished by years of cost cutting.
Jaguar has produced some of the worlds most beautiful automobiles, (XK 120, E type, Mk V) and some of the worst disasters like the Ford X type.

The Jag is by far the uglier turn of events. A 180 cu. in. V-6, making 200hp?

The Porsche, now, can be had with 500hp and a 4 sec. 0-60 rating. I don't care if your car looks like an updated AMC Pacer, if it's got those kind of specs, it's holding true to it's heritage.

Heh. I just realized the X-Type is a "Jagwagon"...

I don't care how well the Porsche performs, it's ugly as sin and doesn't have the right Porsche quality. Maserati did the fast and powerful executive car right. Porsche made a 911 and then subjected it to explosive decompression.

Audi S4.
Audi S6.

Half the price for the S4, 75% for the S6.

Similar performance. And not so ugly the trains run away.

Pretty much a tie as far as I can see. Both are hideous butt slugs.

Actually, I kind of like the Jag X-type.

First things first: It isn't a traditional Jag - and probably shouldn't have been Jag branded in the first place.

The Jag X-type platform is really a Ford Mondeo (sold in the US as the Ford Contour from '95 through '00) with AWD. Yes, it was a failed marketing/rebranding experiment.

However, if you think of the Jag X-type as the Ford Contour's upscale British cousin, it makes more sense. Stop calling it a Jag: Drive it as a Contour SVT AWD and enjoy. The mid-size wagon format (we didn't get that for the Contour in the US) is a bonus for those who could use the space.

Full disclosure: I drive a '95 Contour with the Duratec V6, and still enjoy its combination of balance, handling and affordable fun.

Just isn't done my man. Maybe in the colonies but not here.

Next you'll be suggesting putting a jet engine in the old Spitfire.

the jag S-type was WAYYY Uglier!

A Tarted up Lincon Town Car with a Jag Badge, and Taurus Body Styling.

Homely as a bag full of assholes.

Look at some videos of the Porsche cornering. Like Zero Body-roll. I hated 'em until I saw that

The Jag isn't a wagon, it's a Shooting Brake

Except that the Brits would shits and have panic attacks over anything remotely "shooty".

Okay, okay, it's not really an "SB" unless it's a two door wagon. Or, in Americanese, a "Chevy Nomad".

And yes, the Jag in a two door, proper Shooting Brake package, would be droolworthy indeed.

The Porsche? The like an ugly girl in a dark room, it's all about the driving, eh?

You may choose to do so, if you wish. I wouldn't.

Now that the Panamera exists, however, some will choose to buy a Porsche for that function - before, that wasn't an option.

Essentially, some of the money formerly spent on the alternatives, now goes into Porsche coffers. That makes the company more viable, and helps fund all the other (perhaps more desirable) models.

I am comfortable with that.

Jay, you haven't seen a Porsche Cayenne yet, have you.

A Porsche SUV. *shakes head*

WV: ackosqui. I don't know what the heck it is, but that's too good a made up word to let vanish.

Ehhh?!

Reminds me a bit of the old Volvo sport wagon.

Which I think I'd rather have.

I know I'm late on this one, but Jag has had wagons for years, going back at least to the MK1 Sedan "shooting break" cars.
