Floods Break Out In NH, Central Mass.

BOSTON (CBS) – Rain-swollen rivers and streams spilled into streets and neighborhoods in Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Monday.

Flooding was particularly bad in places like Hooksett and Peterborough, New Hampshire, where parking lots and roads were left underwater.

We've had a seriously snowy winter - the snow kept piling up and piling up, and the temperatures never got warm enough to melt any of it. Now spring's around the corner, and all that snow is melting - fast. The sump pump in my basement kicked on over the weekend and has been running quite a bit - so far it's staying ahead, so that's a good sign. If we get rain like we had five years ago, there are going to be a lot of unintended indoor pools...

Remember, "two is one and one is none" applies to your basement sump pump as well as that fancy AR-15...

That is all.

We've had it bad too. A month's worth of rain in 2hrs on top of all the snow will do that. Some schools here were actually closed yesterday because with so many flooded roads it was too hard to get to the schools. Looks like we have another 4-6 inches of rain coming later in the week too.

Good advice Jay. My parents basement flooded a few years back because the floater on their sump pump wasn't working properly.

Even though I no longer have the basement water concerns I once did - due to some careful grading done as part of a home addition project - I still keep my "water emergency kit" handy. It includes a spare sump pump, 30-odd feet of flat, rollable 1.25" hose, and a collection of fittings that allow me to hook up to everything from threaded pipe to a garden hose. Cheap insurance - and handy enough to help out a neighbor without having to hunt for bits and pieces when they're needed right now.

We have a little water in the sump. I keep watching it. I did make sure the float switch is working and the pump has prime.

Here's hoping ...
