DC Meditations, Day Two...

Yesterday was a double treat. Newbius and his lovely wife escorted the G. family around the Pentagon, a favor for which I am eternally in his debt. This was a once-in-a-lifetime event, at least for me; I've been to DC a number of times in the past and only gotten a look at the outside of the Pentagon from a distance. This time we got a personal guided tour from not one but *TWO* experienced tour guides - the one and only OldNFO joined us in our trip through the big geometrical-shaped building!

After having lunch at the Pentagon Cafe (located in the inner courtyard, which is something like five acres and gives you an idea just how massive the Pentagon is), we traveled over to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center where OldNFO was kind enough to act as tour guide yet again. He walked through the entire museum with us, explaining different bits of aircraft trivia, telling stories from his own personal experience, and just making an already amazing day even better. We then had the pleasure of dining with him at a local restaurant, a perfect end to a perfect day.

Lunch at the Pentagon, dinner in VA after a visit to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Life is good. And, of course, some pictures. Now, there are no cameras allowed at the Pentagon, so no pictures from there. However, that just means that I took twice as many of the planes... Here goes:

The SR-71 Blackbird is without a doubt my most favorite aircraft ever. The whole "Skunkworks" lore, the titanium construction, the airspeed records; everything about this plane is awesome.

Yes, I am totally a child of the 1980s and could not resist the allure of the F-14 Tomcat (called "The Turkey" by OldNFO...)

What would a Jay G. picture post be without guns? Just wait until Friday's gun pr0n...

One of my all time favorite shots...

Thanks again, Newbius and OldNFO, for an incredible day from start to finish that the entire family enjoyed!

That is all.

Awesome. Now I'm jealous. I've never been in the Pentagon.

One of the coolest things about the SR-71 is that they designed it using slide rules.

One of the baddest planes ever and they used a slide rule.

That's cool.

Someday, you gotta get to Wright- Pat in Ohio and see what the Air Force has laying around the Barn. ; )

Aw man, the Blackbird looks like it could've come out of Star Wars. So cool.

Are you planning to get down to the Marine Corps Museum?

I had fun too Jay :-) And yeah, you do need to make the Marine Corps Museum while you're here...

I live only 'bout 8 miles from U-H Center. Was at Dulles when the SR-71 landed after the last flight. Details at Friday's dinner.

Kind of jealous...I did DC once, and instead of just enjoying one museum, I tried running through both the Air and Space Museum AND the Natural History Museum in the same 5 hour period...I'm lucky I didn't suffer permanent eye strain.
