Reader Steve sends in this head-scratcher from right here in MA:
Man kills himself with power saw after police find woman, 2 dogs dead inside homePLYMOUTH, Mass. -- Massachusetts police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide they discovered after watching a man cut into his leg with a power saw.
Authorities aren't commenting on how the woman (or dogs) was killed.
Another story hints it may have been the same power saw (Weerd, here's another "Gun Death" for you). There's not a lot more to add, other than to make a few points:
- It's not the tool that does the killing. This is true whether the tool used is a Porter-Cable power saw or a Smith & Wesson revolver.
- A determined person can use pretty much anything as a murder weapon. Or suicide for that matter.
- The strictest gun control in the world won't stop domestic violence; it will merely change the tools used.
- There's two overlooked victims here, the two police officers who responded to this call. Get some counseling, guys, you're gonna need it - who else in MA (or the US for that matter) has watched a suicide-by-SkilSaw?
And the sick bastard in me wonders what kind of distance he got with the spray while cutting through his leg...That is all.

I was thinking about how the hell do you get the balls up to work a circular saw into your femoral artery? and you think this:

you win the sick bastard award!!!

But surely we can all agree to reasonable limits on lethality? Do private citizens really need professional grade Suicide Saws, other than to cover up their insecurities? High-powered Suicide Saws like Porter-Cable and DeWalt belong on foreign job sites, not in our basements and garages.
A handsaw from Sears, or a hacksaw with no more than six blades, is enough to accomplish most tasks around the home. Nobody needs more than that. If you need to cut plywood to build a shed, then perhaps with special licensing and inspection and a lengthy waiting period, you might be permitted... No, wait, they make you do that to build a damn shed anyhow.
Can't remember where I saw it, but I read that someone cut his own head off with a chain saw.
Probably a former Gurkah ...
A friend of mine was working at a Food Lion at the deli counter. One day, after the deli had closed, a man walked by, switched on the meat cutting band-saw and ran as much of his neck through as possible before gravity took over. Now THAT takes determination or an extreme chemical imbalance.
Spray distance is for amateurs.
What I wanna know, is did he make the cut square, true and plumb?!
Good craftsmanship is always to be admired, y'know.

I once saw 'after' photos of a suicide committed with a industrial-size bandsaw. Holidays, guy drunk and morose, BIG fight with family, walked out, climbed up on the sliding table, turned the saw on, and pulled himself through. At least until the spine was bisected and the table carried the rest through.
I know; I was assured the investigation was VERY thorough 'cause they couldn't believe it either, but everything came out to suicide.
Which is which? Ahmmmm...
