So, You Want to Shut Down the Government...

Commenter Bubblehead Les brings up an interesting point about the looming government shut-down:
Foxnews mentioned the fact that, if the Gooberment Shuts down, the IRS is putting Check Distribution and Tax Forms processing on Hold. Also, the Background Check System is considered "Non-Essential", and every Gun purchase will be put on Hold. So, if these Idjits in D.C. do shut down, those who are waiting until the Last minute to File, then get a Refund Loan to do BAG will not be able to do so, if it goes that long. And if you already have the cash, and are just waiting until April 15th., and the Shut Down is in effect....
Gee, they won't be doing background checks if the .gov shuts down. For however long the shutdown lasts, no one will be able to buy a firearm from a Federally licensed Firearms dealer. Do you think that might just be a feature, rather than a bug? Not to mention all those folks expecting their tax returns - the "interest-free loan to Uncle Sucker" just took a bit longer to get back to you, sorry.

Now, I don't think it's going to happen. I think the Republicans remember the shutdown of 1995 with a mixture of fear and anger, remembering how the media portrayed it as exclusively their fault that the federal government was brought to a halt over budgetary disagreements. They'll be very reluctant to run the risk of going through that particular wringer again, knowing that a fawning media (Ă˜bama is awesome!) would never connect the dots and ask how the three month old GOP majority could be responsible for a shut-down over a budget that the current administration wouldn't compromise on. At least in 1995 the GOP majority had nearly a full year to take the blame for...

It gets even more interesting:

What you can expect with a government shutdown

  • Military personnel won't get paid
  • Tax refunds won't go out
  • EPA permits won't be granted
  • National Parks will be closed
BUT
  • Medicare payments will continue
  • Social Security checks will go out
  • Taxes are still due 4/18
Interesting, is it not, that the government is still open to take your money, but it won't be giving any out - unless you happen to be a demographic that votes largely Democratic. I know, I know, you're all shocked - shocked - to hear that there's gambling in this establishment that they're protecting their own, but try to put away the shocked face for a moment...

In any case, if you're planning on using your tax refund for your Buy A Gun Day purchase, you might want to re-think your plans...

That is all.

Dammit. The refund already went toward the wife's diamond anniversary ring (and we already got that money) for our 20th. I already have the money for MY anniversary present, and was planning on purchasing said wheelgun at the gun show on the 17th if I could find one (S&W 686 SSR is the plan...). Now I might have to wait longer? Oh, HELL no...

I thought that the rule was that if they didn't get reap se within 48 hours, the transaction defaulted to proceed?

I bet the .mil gets paid. They got paid in '95, and there wasn't 3 wars going on then.

The first person to be denied their right to purchase a firearm because NICS is nonessential needs to give Alan Gura a call.

I'm pretty sure that the Supremes said that it was a right.

In Iowa, your carry permit is acceptable in lieu of the NCIS check (because they already did an NCIS check to obtain the permit), so no worries on my part. I do agree with Tam though.

That was my first thought as well. The problem is that the shutdown will probably be over by the time any case gets to trial, so the court will probably (joyfully) dismiss it as moot. I would still be worth a shot if you could get the legal fees covered, though.

Just listening to news radio here in DC ( WTOP ). The Government won’t shut down.

Why?

If shut down, all Govt employees with a Govt issued Blackberry will have to turn theirs in immediately. House and Senate included.

You can’t take a Crackberry unless you pry it from their cold dead hands.

The Government will not shut down.

Actually, if these Shenanigans continue through, and it does affect BAG day, those who have the Spare Cash should attend a Gun Show that weekend and purchase something from the guy with the "Not a Dealer" placard, as a measure of Solidarity with the Philosophy of BAG day. My tables will on Aisle 7... ; )

That was my thought, too Les.

Bless you gun show loophole!

The military will be paid. See the Army Times article at: http://www.armytimes.com/news/2011/04/defense-army-considers-feed-and-forage-act-040511army/
If you file electronically your tax refund will be processed.
Given how EPA drags their feet on any permit process a shutdown won't be noticeable.
And I'm sure the animals at National Parks will enjoy the quiet.
As usual "they" are playing to our fears (thank you Al Gore for that memorable phrase). I don't think the shutdown will happen but it will serve to show us what we really don't need.

Military personnel will get paid, I've seen that reported in several places. If the .gov can't process returns does that mean that I won't have to send my check in? Didn't think so.

Okay, I'll buy a used gun. Locally.

If the dealer does not have a reply from NICS within three business days, then the transaction is legal according to the Brady Act.
