Friday Gun Pr0n #219

My readers know what I like... Jim sends in a picture of his birthday present:

Love Me Some .357 Magnum

That's a Smith & Wesson model 686-6 Pro Series .357 Magnum. Seven shots of .357 Magnum goodness in an L-frame tuned to perfection. One could do a lot worse than this wheelgun - and it'd be hard to do much better short of a Python (see NFO? *g*)

Now there is a gun that cries out for some fancy wooden stocks and a Dragon Leatherworks holster!

That is all.

Yeah, but Dragon won't MAKE a holster for a 686. I just asked him this week, and he refused. Go with Lobo gunleather--(google it). Not as handsome, but pretty in an understated way and functional. I have one for my 1911.

Considering that he's made holsters for S&W K-frame revolvers (I have one), I can only surmise that he misunderstood your request.

It wasn't a refusal...that gives it the appearance of being rather rude, which I wasn't. I did explain that I did one once, and it wasn't up to my standards.

I did make one for a 686 (for Linoge at Walls of the City) and while it looks great, its not a daily wear (I explained this to Will) and the retention isn't as good as I would like it to be (also explained) for a gun of that frame size. My o verarching concern is safety and retention, and based on those two criteria along with keeping the FlatJack as small, conealable, and comfortable as possible, I politely passed on the request as I didn't want to attempt to stuff that frame size into a holster design that Linoge and I had both agreed was a bit small for that large a frame.

I'm not one of those to say *yeah I can do it* only to dissapoint when the final product is delivered.

Again, it wasn't a *refusal*...it was a concern for the safety of the gun owner, stating such, and knowing the limitations of my product.

Well, props to Dragon for not bending on the quality of his work, and props to William for suggesting Lobo gunleather. I have two of his holsters, they are great.

I don't wish to be a hijacker, but I fail to appreciate the difference between "I didn't refuse, but I won't make one because it's not up to my standards".

Not that Dragon didn't have a perfectly good reason for refusal. I do not wish to have an unsafe holster. I also realize we are talking about a custom-made item handcrafted by a single individual. As such his time is limited. And, Dragon is not a common carrier, he may pick and choose the commissions he wishes to do. I'm down with all of that.

But, at the end of the day, if I want a holster to carry my 686, I need to ask another manufacturer, as he won't make a flatjack for that weapon nor does he make any other that will fit.

That's too bad. I was going to try to get a Dragon Leatherworks holster for it, but I understand if it's not feasible. I'll just have to settle on a Talon for the 1911A1 Mil-Spec... :)

And thanks for the tip, Will. I'll check Lobo out for the 686.
