I also experience this with pitchers of juice, Kool-Aid, etc. - we have a rule in our house that if you finish it you make up the next pitcher, so my kids are very careful to leave about a 1/4" of liquid in the pitcher.
May 2, 2020, for the record, but I'm not counting down or anything...
We had a similar rule at my house, plus if you finished the milk you were to toss the carton in the trash so Mom or Dad would know to buy more. Same result - a carton with 1/4" of milk in the bottom that sat there until it curdled.
Usually Dad (i.e. I) found it on the rare occasion when he wanted a bowl of cereal before leaving for work.
I feel your pain, Jay. Came home from work yesterday. Daughter was home all day. Both doors open, all the lights on, two TV's blaring, and the air conditioner running at full throttle.
Like Greg said, same thing happened when I was in the Navy. But what torques me off is when the Dumb Ass College kids "Chief the Pot" at the workplace, then give you crap on how "I'm not being paid to refill the pot." Of course, when they sit back down at their desk into a pool of Coffee, you should see their faces when you walk by and say "Gee, I wonder who's job it is to clean up that mess?"
Of course, if you were single and childless like myself, you'd be looking at 3/4 of a gallon of milk that expired nine days ago thinking, "Man, what a waste."
My 9 year old, who should take out the trash, leave whatever possible in its original place, empty or not, to avoid the trash can becoming full. How's that for laziness?
I'll trade you that for the eleventy billion sheets of paper with some variation of a princess drawn on them that sprout continuously in my living room.
At My house, you'd get the mostly empty Carton AND 2 or 3 cups similar to yours with the milk or juice the kids didn't finish that my wife put back in so as not to waste it. Noble effort but when I find said cups by knocking them over 3 weeks later as I shuffle the contents of the fridge, the kids get to learn new words :-)

Open Invitation for New Shooters
Just want to extend an open invitation to all potential new shooters in the Northern Virginia area. If you have never shot a firearm, or would like to get back into the shooting sports, or are an accomplished shooter who'd like to try something in my arsenal, give me a shout.
New shooters get range time, targets, gun use and ammo on me. I've even got extra eye and ear protection - all you have to do is show up.

"Dad, you always tell me don't waste food. So I'm not."
"It wasn't empty!"

That's fine...you can have that milk to go with what I found inside EMPTY granola bar box I found in my pantry.
In the Navy, we used call this 'Chiefing the pot' when applied to coffee.
And if they go to community college, you a couple more years.
If there is a major university in your town, you can add on 4 years.
Just keeping it real, don't want you to get your hopes up too soon.
Then there is that whole "I can't find a job and need some place to live" thing....but I would be mean to mention it.

Am I the only one who saw the pic and thought "What is THAT sample doing in his fridge..."?

I too wondered what that "specimen" was at first.

Look at the bright side at least it didn't have a bunch of crumbs mixed in with it, ala' drinking out of the carton while eating oreos.......
