Lyudmila
Since he named his first firearm, Brad felt it fitting to give his first rifle a name as well. He chose Lyudmila in honor of the Russian sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko. The rifle is the venerable Mosin-Nagant M91/30, chambered in the very capable 7.62X54mmR cartridge, which has the distinction of being the oldest cartridge still in active use.
And yes, I can attest from the Northeast bloggershoot, she still kicks like a mule...
That is all.

Jay;
A slip-over recoil pad from Uncle Mikes, sure takes the sting out of that Russian steel buttplate on a Mosy.
Annnd, I had the honor of drilling "the helmet" right between the headlights with that fine old piece of iron.
As soon as I saw the name Lyudmila in the AAR I had a feeling it was a Mosin-Nagant. Excellent choice, Brad! My first "big boy" rifle was a Mosin, and I haven't regretted it a bit. (Nope, no whining about recoil here. Not where people can hear, anyway.)
The nice thing about the bolt gun is it's not fussy about surplus ammo like some semi-autos can be.
Why do people keep saying that a Mosin's recoil hurts? I don't understand.
A Mossberg 500 in 12 GA... now, THAT recoil hurts! But a Mosin (or an Enfield, or a Garand)? Love taps.
WV="devil". Is Governor Patrick reading this?
Hey Brad, I still have a magazine full of x54R if you want to try my semi autos. I got halfway home and tought 'oh crap Brad wanted some trigger time'
Most humble apologies sir!
Never hurts to have a Mosin or two around. And with the price of 30-06 nowadays....
All,
Time for me to reply. First, thank you for the comments.
@Roger - I checked the Uncle Mike's web site - found it tough to use, not navigation friendly, etc. Didn't find the pad.
@DT - Lyudmila is indeed a fine old piece of shootin' iron. In case you didn't know, your Lovely Bride had a turn with Lyudmila. Assuming we do blogger-shoot 2012, I'll be sure to bring Lyudmila along with a copious supply of fodder.
@ DaveH - Lyudmila will be the first of many center-fire long arms. A Garand from the CMP is on my radar as a purchase within the next 12 months. BAG day awaits.
@Ross - I agree, the recoil from the Mosin isn't that bad. I ran 5 rounds of 12ga target loads through a Saiga-12 at the blogger shoot. My name for the saiga is The Punisher.
@Wally - I'd love to try your ruskie semi-auto. Email me at bradr65 at jee-male daht cahm. Maybe we can arrange something. You're more than welcome to run several mags through my 22/45 Ruger (aka Cherry) if interested.
@Les, yes .30-06 is pricey. When I buy the garand from the CMP, I'm gonna get me a pack of 192 rounds of ammo in clips & bandoleers. The 192 is just a c-note.
- Brad
You keep this up and I might have to go and buy myself a Mosin...
whoever had the Ithica M66 is 20 ga may have a clue
on what I'm about to say. I have the 12ga version and with 3" shells or 3" slug loads that KICKS hard. It's light
for a shotgun. I have had some fond bruses from it.
Eck!
