Wings of Freedom Update...

Brad_in_MA sent me this link, with the idea that a little imagery might help push the fence-sitters over...

World War II-era planes draw enthusiasts

WORCESTER — The Wings of Freedom tour with its display of vintage World War II aircraft — a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator heavy bomber and a P-51 Mustang fighter plane at Worcester Regional Airport — is attracting history buffs of all ages and veterans of World War II who lived that history.
Oh, and there's a picture of a B-17 Flying Fortress at the link. Go check it out. Nah, I gotta put it in here...

(picture from link)

The exhibit is at Nashua Airport, Boire field. It opens at 10AM and runs until 5PM, with private flights occuring after the walk-throughs close (IOW, we won't be competing with 1,000 HP radial engines to talk). For $12 ($6 for kids) you get a chance to walk through a plane that saw service against the Nazis - that's a bahgain at twice the price (but don't tell them that...)

So far we've got libertyman, Brad, and yankeefried as definites, with Weerdbeard and SCI-FI as possibles. We're going to meet at 10 when it opens (it has been suggested to meet under the wing of the B-24, or we could meet in the parking lot. I suspect y'all will find me...), and most likely hang around until we start to get hungry. There's plenty of places to eat in the Nashua area, so if we want to find a place to have lunch that can be arranged.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to wear the kilt or not - anyone want to persuade or dissuade me?

That is all.

Can't make it this weekend. Take lots of pictures, and wear that dress! I'll drop some bread in your jar!

Having been on these birds a few times I would stay with pants. you are going up laders, walking through bomb bays and that kind of thing. . . sorry, but there is a reason the crews wore pants. . .

Back in jr. high, I climbed through "Sentimental Journey" at Oshkosh and I've been in love with the B-17 ever since. Recently I found a poster of the same bird and it's hanging in my bedroom. I know an old gentleman who was a ball turret gunner.

I'd say wear the kilt, but you'd probably end up...um... maneuvering awkwardly, so to speak. Wear pants so you can concentrate on the plane. If they put her in the air, close your eyes and listen to the music.

Go for the kilt. Not many could say they've been up in one of those historic birds and fewer still in a kilt. Fly those bits for freedom from cancer bro!

Hmph. This Lady has a name, y'know. She's the Nine O' Nine, the B-17G restored and maintained with loving care by the Collings Foundation.

A thousand pardons, Lady.

Will see her on Sunday and make proper amends.

I highly recommend springing for the flight time. Best $800 I ever spent. Only when you're Airborne can you really appreciate what thoose guys did --- that there are all these holes in the skin - which the thickness of a coke can - - The uncovered control cables for the rudder runs by your elbow - you can see the ground through the closed bombay doors -- everything is vibrating -- it's LOUD -- You can smell fuel -- The passage across the bombay is only 4 inches wide and it's 5,000 foot drop.

-- and I'll bet they are already sold out of the few flights they have scheduled.
