Paging Giant Asteroid, Earth On Line One

Reader Scott sends in a story that has me rooting for the giant asteroid, it really does...

Aiken trick-or-treater, 10, pulls gun
A 10-year-old Aiken trick-or-treater pulled a gun on a woman who said she would take his candy on Halloween.

According to a police incident report, the 28-year-old victim told authorities she recognized some boys from her neighborhood while they were trick-or-treating about 6:30 p.m. Monday near Schroeder and George streets and jokingly told them she would take their candy.
This hits home pretty hard for me. TheBoy is 10. He knows daddy owns guns (hell, he's shot some of them). I know for a damn fact that he knows guns are not toys, and that pointing a gun at someone (who is not trying to kill you) is wrong. Heck, I'm about 99% certain that BabyGirl G. knows this as well. They both know that they would be unable to sit for a week if they pulled something even 1/10th this idiotic (like threatening someone with an airsoft or BB gun, frex).

What frightens me is that this is apparently so commonplace that these boys thought nothing of stealing property from their own kin and using it to threaten others over freakin' Halloween candy. They think nothing of the threat of deadly force over $20 worth of candy - imagine what they'd do if someone disrespected them - or bumped into them? While I realize that I'm walking perilously close to the "blood in the streets" hysteria from the anti-gun lobby, they're talking about adult gun owners who have taken classes while I'm talking about kids not even old enough to shave.

One wonders what penalties these boys will face. Certainly the courts can do very little other than remand them to juvenile detention; at 10 years old even that's iffy. Hopefully mom & dad will have a heart-to-heart (and hand-to-rear) and once they emerge from grounding (and military school) they will go on to lead happy, productive, law-abiding lives. But I wouldn't bet on it.Reading the comments is also pretty scary. Folks are actually defending the kids having guns, saying that the woman shouldn't have threatened to steal their candy. I hope, for humanity's sake, that these folks are joking.

Because if they are serious, I really am gonna root for the asteroid to hit us...

That is all.

I'm betting that the kid is black and only has a mother at home, no father. Not trying to be racist here, just playing the percentages on crimes of this sort.

Another reason that if Children who are too young/immature to handle Firearms are present in the Home, lock up your Guns. Except for the ones you have on you. I also noticed that the news story thought that the pistols were safe because there "wasn't a magazine in the Gun." Errr, "One up the Spout" mean anything to you, Stupid News Person? Rule One, Newsie.

DISCLAIMER: I am against 10-year-olds totin' boomsticks. Is bad idea.

However.

They think nothing of the threat of deadly force over $20 worth of candy...

Now, I wasn't there, so I don't know if it went "Oh, how cute! I'mma get your candy!" or "Hey, you little bastard, I be stealin your candy."

In the latter case? I'd draw down on a 28-year-old so fast it'd make your head spin.

Semantics, I know. The kid is flat wrong to be carrying a gun, but would you have acted any differently?

I just read my comment. Holy crap. Lemme rephrase:

In the latter case? I'd be ready to draw down on a 28-year-old so fast it'd make your head spin.

There. Now I sound less getoffamyside-ey. So sorry.

I understand what you're getting at, Tweaker, I really do.

And if that were indeed the case, it would change things *slightly*. Very slightly.

My son went out trick-or-treating with friends this year rather than with ol' mom & dad. There was an adult checking in on them at all times. If this person really did mean the boy harm, where was the responsible adult?

When people comment that it is okay for them to protect their candy... If the kids go to court they will probably get a family judge like this guy.

Thanks, J. I was starting to worry how I was coming off.

And that's a good point. Where was the responsible adult? I doubt that such a thing existed for this kid, otherwise he wouldna been carrying a gun.

Definitely a heapin' helpin of WTF.
