Police: Man apparently tried to rob pawn shop, shot dead
A man who apparently tried to rob a pawn shop was shot to death Wednesday morning after exchanging gunfire with a store employee, Metro Police said.Judging from the statement given by the regional VP for the pawn shop, I'd be surprised if the employee who did the shooting was disciplined. The article says that the employee and the robber "exchanged shots" - now that could mean just about anything, but I wonder if the goblin just came in and started shooting, or was agitated that the clerk wasn't moving fast enough, or if the clerk came up with something other than a bag of cash from under the counter - like a 12 gauge.
A man entered the Cash America SuperPawn store in the 7000 block of North Durango Drive about 9:30 a.m. in what appeared to be an attempt to rob the store, Metro spokesman officer Bill Cassell said.
In any case, the good guy goes home, the bad guy goes to the morgue - and the count clicks over another goblin...

Here in california, pawn shop employees routinely open carried pistols, so could it be the same way there?

Remember that outside of the PRM, pawn shops often are also gun dealers (02 FFL) and so there are fire arms on display and it makes sense to have armed staff.
The shop shown on Pawn Stars is not an 02 FFL, they only sell antique firearms, but I'd bet that their security staff is armed as well.
Money, valuables, and firearms would make a very tempting target to a crook, especially if there was no one armed there. Like LMB, I'd be surprised if none of the employees were armed.
Most pawn shops I've been in, I know the workers carry. Many a time when I'm asking for recommendations they proudly show me what they are carrying.
